My 5 Inch Telescope Project
This Piece of glass was given to me by someone in the ATM workshop at Chabot Observatory. I'm not sure what the blank had originally been intended for. Possibly a secondary for a cassegrain, since the blank was polished on both sides and one was convex. I created a Plaster of Paris tile tool, coated it in resin and glued the tiles on with epoxy.
After an hour of grinding, the mirror now has a concave surface and grinding action is taking place almost out to the edge of the blank. I placed X's on all of the tiles to see if the grinding action was taking place evenly.
10/04/2003 Disaster has struck! After moving to Lewisville, Texas, I had my mirror shipped to me. However, it arrived damaged! It now has a 1/8" clamshell chip in the side of the ground face. Oh, well, I will make a new tile tool and flip the blank over and grind the back instead.
