In Alas Smith and Jones they presented the program themselves and showed sketches through out. The show had some of the same Writers from Not The Nine O'Clock News.
In the series The World According to Smith and Jones- the duo went through historical clips and rewrote the history of the world! Along the way they prooved Queen Victoria was a vaccum cleaner and the Eurovision song contest was won in 1195 by Britain.
The series Smith and Jones returned to a sketch-less version of the Alas series and dealt with contempory issues and the like. This is the Smith and Jones I remember. The rest of the info I gathered was from the BBC site.
'Alas Smith and Jones' and 'Smith and Jones' both used the Head to Head sequences where they spoke face to face about various topics. These were always very funny and covered a variety of issues including mail-order brides and STDs.
