Masaaki Sakai (Monkey) used to be in a band previous to the show called 'The Spiders'.
I'm not sure on the exact date when it was first aired but I believe it was 1979/81.

| A Japanese action/ adventure series that became a cult. The series follows Monkey, Tripikata, Sandy and Pigsy as they search for Buddhist scriptures. Its vaguely based on Hsuan Tsang (Tripikata) how actually existed and did travel to India in 629 AD on such a mission (though I'm guessing a magic cloud was not really involved!)
