The story revolves around Shinra, Cloud (main character) and Sephiroth. If memory serves there is a whole lotta basing on materia in this (a form of magic).
Black/ Dark materia is used to call a meteor to destroy the earth and various other evils are resurrected during this.
Cloud has what appears at first to be some form of amnesia... all becomes apparant during the game...
