Book Review:
Naked, by David Sedaris
Naked, by David Sedaris is an autobiography,
comical and entertaining collection of memories. Naked is enjoyable to read
because of the humor that Sedaris uses in different types of events. David Sedaris, uses a unique style of humor; even if embarrassing
himself, which keeps the reader addicted and hooked to reading his stories.
David Sedaris was born into a big
Greek family and describes his childhood vividly which causes the reader to
recapture dark memories of their own. He has many compulsions which caused him
to lick light switches and make high pitched noises during class. Sedaris also
discovers that he is gay and must deal with that obstacle as well.
Sedaris has a good way of being
comical from his own problems. "You're up and down like a flea. I turn my
back for two minutes and there you are with your tongue pressed against that
light switch. Maybe they do that where you come from, but here in my classroom
we don't leave our seats and lick things whenever we please (7)." Although
Sedaris has weird tendencies, he is humorous about it.
The author also includes some of the
funniest moments of his hitchhiking experiences. As traveling with Sedaris and
his quadriplegic hitchhiking companion, we listen to his foul mouthed seat mate
on a long bus trip. "I said you're goddamned right I'm having this fucking
baby. I said I'd have this stinking piece of shit whether he wanted to be the
fucking daddy or not (154)."
I think that Naked is very
entertaining and the humor that David Sedaris is a quality that all authors
should have. As Sedaris writes about the low points of his life from terrifying
experiences of his homosexuality, to some near-death hitchhiking experiences he
leaves his readers hooked to these experiences.
Naked is a book that is laugh out
loud funny and original. I would recommend this book to anyone that is in high
school and older because they may not understand some situations. Along with
that, the reader must have a good sense of humor. It will make the reader laugh
at how he can trigger something in your head that reassesses your life and some
of your darkest memories.
