The Good Side of Procrastination

Drag, hesitate, loiter, pot off, and stall. These are words that are associated with the word procrastinate. Procrastinate: To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness (Dictionary.com). The word procrastinate is from pro-forward and cras-tomorrow. Procrastinators are known to be lazy and always stressful because they leave everything for the last minute. Or is procrastination necessarily a bad thing?

Procrastination is portrayed to be a negative word and a bad habit. However, is that true? For example, students that are procrastinators usually work better under pressure. This is good practice for their future. If they are working somewhere and they are assigned to do something at the last minute, they will know that they can do the work because when they were younger, they did it all the time. These people may also be smarted because they can work under stress.

Another case in which procrastination is beneficial is that while you are procrastinating, it allows you to focus on what you are doing. When I think of a procrastinator, I see a person lying on their bed with the television on. The boy of girl is sitting comfortably watching their favorite show with the clock ticking. Before they know it, it’s 12:30. The computer screen is on with Microsoft Word on the screen, but it’s blank. All that is filled out is the heading and the title. When a person procrastinates, they brainstorm ideas of how they should do their work. A person will focus on just one project, and when ready to attempt the work, they already have a cluster of ideas that would help them.

Procrastination is like a crocodile waiting to get its food. It swerves up behind its prey, creeping slowly. When the crocodile approaches from behind, it waits for the perfect moment to snap at its prey and eats it whole. It swallows it fast, and devours it. Just like a person attempting to start his or her work. They wait for the perfect moment to start. They finally realize that they have to begin doing their work, so they snap at the moment and begin doing their work quickly. Procrastination is a good habit, because people or animals wait for the perfect moment to begin their work (or eat their prey).

Procrastination is usually portrayed as a bad thing. It is practice for the real world and it is waiting for the right time. When someone waits for the right time to begin something, it ends up being a success. When someone takes their time, and they work on things gradually, it’s all scattered. If someone is under pressure, and they have their mind focused on one thing because they left it off to the last minute, it’s much better than doing it slowly.
