THE LINE UP
THE SONG IS YOU...
our title tune featuring a sax solo by Craig Burgess.
ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET...
a Sy Oliver arrangement for the Tommy Dorsey band and his
female vocal quartet, The Sentimentalists.  Our version includes Craig Burgess performing the lead lines originally done by Dorsey, accompanied by our guest artists Buddy Cole on baritone sax and Larry Boisen playing the harmony parts on tenor.   The vocal chorus was rearranged by Bob Zaun for our SATB group.
ROUTE 66...
the Bobby Troup "American classic" with Craig taking a couple of choruses on alto plus a nice
guitar solo by Bob Vale.
ALICE IN WONDERLAND...
this is a beautiful waltz from the Walt Disney "book" that the band performed
for many years, sans vocal.  When Bob' granddaughter, Paige, was born, he wrote these words for her and did this vocal arrangement.   Little did he know the tune already had lyrics!  Frankly, we like these better than the original.  Don't you Walt?
YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE...
Stevie Wonder wrote it and the Four Freshmen recorded it in
CHICAGO...
another famous Sy Oliver arrangement for Tommy Dorsey and the Sentimentalists, who off stage
were The Clark Sisters.  Later they recorded under their real name.
WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR...
this was originally sung by Geppetto in Disney's first full length animated
cartoon, "Pinnochio."   Our arrangement features one of our guest artists, Larry Boisen.  The vocal quartet takes the first chorus then Larry shines for 16 bars on flute.  After Craig fills a pretty 8 bar bridge, Larry returns, this time on harmonica. A very pretty tune with a message as meaningful today as it was when it was written.  Listen carefully at the end for the poignant wind chime solo performed flawlessly by guest artist, Judge Charles D. Heath, III, Circuit Judge, Marinette County,WI.  Chuck also was our session photographer.
1986 with a swinging big band on their Grammy Award winning album, "Fresh."    Bob Zaun took the band arrangement and wrote words to the horn parts including the instrumental solos which each of the Four Freshmen originally performed.  This technique is  called "vocalese."
UNTIL I MET YOU...
a Basie tune written by his famous rhythm guitar player, Freddie Green.  Originally titled,
"Corner Pocket," vocalese lyrics were written by Don Wolf all about a pool playing playboy and the vocal version was renamed.  Each of the singers get a chance to perform one of the instrumental solos from the original Basie recording. The vocal arrangement was done by Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer who helped to popularize this style of singing with their Grammy Award winning album "Vocalese" in 1986.
IT'S SAND, MAN...
Lambert, Hendricks & Ross recorded this Basie tune on their first album, "Sing A Song of
Basie" in 1958.  It was this album that launched this legendary group on its meteoric flight to fame.  Lyrics are by Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert.  Hendricks' ability to write such creative and powerful vocalese lyrics earned him the moniker "The James Joyce of Jazz!"
SH-BOOM...
in 1954 a local west coast group named The Chords made a sudden impact with this number.
The Crew Cuts quickly did a cover.  Their cover became number one on the charts for 9 weeks and The Chords faded out of sight!  Our updated version has multi key changes and features a sax section of Craig Burgess on first alto and first tenor, Larry Boisen on second alto and second tenor and Buddy Cole playing baritone sax.  Larry even plays a 2 bar clarinet lick.
THIS COULD BE THE START OF SOMETHING BIG...
Steve Allan was very creative on many fronts, music
being one.  He was an excellent jazz piano player and a wonderful composer.  This is perhaps his most famous composition.  Here we feature Peggy Coniff's solo voice and Craig wailing on alto sax.
THE MORE I SEE YOU...
a beautiful ballad arranged by Bob Zaun.  In addition to some beautiful vocal
harmonies, Tom Sievers does some nice bass work while Craig takes a very mellow tenor sax solo.
LEAP FROG...
Les Brown's theme song.  This version was recorded in 1944.  Bob wrote all of the swinging,
hip lyrics about that time immemorial art of love making, "Leap Froggin!"   There is also some driving big band drumming by John Eifert, percussionist extraordinaire.
THAT'S THE WAY IT GOES...
a pretty love song in doo wopp style with some great harmonies.   Arranged
by Tim Hauser of The Manhattan Transfer and recorded live by them in 1983 in Tokyo.  But theirs was a cover too.  Inital credit for this little number goes to The Harptones!
JUMP, JIVE AN' WAIL...
Louis Prima wrote and performed it many times in his Las Vegas act.  Craig does
his best to imitate rockin' Sam Butera on tenor sax.  Bob Vale is also featured on vibes and guitar.  Today swing's the thing and this almost turns into a sing-a-long during our live performances.
BRAHMS' LULLABY...
every mother and probably many  fathers have sung this to their babies as they
rocked them to sleep.  The problem is the extent of the known words.   After, "Lullaby and good night," wordwise it would fall apart...nobody knew what (if anything) came next so they started making up their own words.  When Bob Zaun's grandson was born, Bob, decided to join the crowd and write words to this classic lullaby and dedicate it to Ryan.  Next came the acappella vocal arrangement.  The harmonies are so pretty and the words so universally understood that  this soon  became our encore number.   Although we never researched it, we were told after one performance that the original words were in German.
