Recorded at Lincoln Park, Kenosha, WI July 21, 2006
1. ROUTE 66.........most Jazz Spectrum concerts begin with this swinging Bobby Troup tune.
2. HEART'S DESIRE.......a doo wop ballad featuring Peggy with Stacy taking the lead on the bridge.
3. SH BOOM.......the classic 50's tune initially recorded by a West Coast group, The Chords. It was such a local hit, that the Crew Cuts quickly made a cover which held The Hit Parade's #1 spot for 9 weeks. Nobody remembers The Chords! Who?
4. WAVE.....Antonio Carlos Jobin's laid-back bossa nova. You'll hear Stacy calling for her "tomato" which is a shaker in the form of a tomato.
5. SO RARE.....this tune was originally a hit recording by Jimmy Dorsey. His brother, Tommy, was furious with him because he said that Jimmy sold out to the commercial audience. Unfortunately, Tommy died before the recording was released and became such a huge success. Jimmy died six months later and never enjoyed the resulting royalties. It took Jimmy over 30 takes in the studio to get the sound he wanted, Craig is required to do it one take, Was he up to it? You be the judge,,,but we think JD would be proud.
6. ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK....what more has to be said about this classic. Like many of Bob Zaun's arrangements, it does have a unique twist to it!
7. JIVE......The Mill's brothers made the first popular recording of this 40's tune, followed by The Manhattan Transfer, followed by The Jazz Spectrum!
8. TAKE 5...... Craig does justice to Paul Desmond's tune. The story is that Dave Brubeck asked each member of his quartet to bring some original material to the next rehearsal. Paul didn't have an entire tune, just the opening riff, and he played it in 4/4/ time. Brubeck, who was interested in different time signatures in those days, asked if Desmond could play it in 5/4. The rest is part of jazz history!
9. JINGLE BELLS....an unusual tune to play in July. But if Basie can do it, we can too. You'll have to read the liner notes to understand that.
10. DADDY....another Bobby Troup tune. We worked this up for a concert in Munster, Indiana on Father's Day, 2003. Everyone liked it so much, it has become a staple in our book of tunes.
11. DREAM....The 40's musical program, The Chesterfield Hour (sponsored by Chesterfield cigarettes), was hosted by the songwriter and sometime singer, Johnny Mercer. The show's producer asked Mercer to write a theme song for the show and "Dream" was the result....."as the smoke rings rise in the air...."
12. FLIGHT OF THE FOO BIRDS.... a swinging tune written my Neil Hefti and recorded by Count Basie (as are so many of Hefti's compositions). Bob Zaun wrote the lyrics based on the old line, "If the Foo shits, wear it." The words are very cleaver and are printed in the liner notes.
13. TUXEDO JUNCTION...a Glen Miller favorite, with a short scat solo by Stacy,
14. APRIL IN PARIS....perhaps the most famous recording by Count Basie. Who can forget the entire Basie band playing this in full formal attire in the middle of the desert in the movie, "Blazing Saddles?"
16. HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA.....Peggy Coniff, with her Irish heritage, always wanted to celebrate a birthday in an Irish pub....so we did in September, 2004, a landmark birthday for her. A group of us including Peggy, Tim, Bob and their spouses plus 3 other couples (Jazz Spectrum fans) met in a Dublin pub. A fun party it was.,. We even had a couple of Guinesses or four. After returning from Ireland, Bob wrote this arrangement. It has become our encore number.
17. CHOO CHOO CH' BOOGIE reprise,,,,,a little travelin' music as Jackie Gleason used to say. It was a beautiful evening with a responsive audience. We had a great time. Hopefully, this recording not only captures the music, but also the mood.
$9.97
$16.50
15. CHOO CHOO CH' BOOGIE...we fashioned our arrangement after The Manhattan Transfer's rendition. Craig takes some fun instrumental choruses and the vocal quartet works the quick lyric about a guy who can't find work...or choses not to!
