Years ago, the Matchup obtained a bootlegged copy of Craig Kilborn's resume tape. On it, Kilborn, then a sportscaster for a station in Salinas, Calif., pretended he didn't know the camera was on him following a commercial break. He earnestly looked over at the news anchorwoman and told her he had been thinking about her a lot away from the office.
Then he turned to the camera and said, "Oh, we're on!" Delivered perfectly, the stunt foreshadowed classic ESPN Kilborn.
Since Kilborn left ESPN to become a professional comedian at Comedy Central and CBS, he, ironically, hasn't been very funny.
Conversely to Kilborn, Rich Eisen was a professional comedian before he arrived at ESPN. Eisen, now with the NFL Network, never overdid his schtick, choosing instead to tell just enough jokes to satisfy.
In the end, Eisen was funny, but Kilborn owns this historic Matchup title. |
