My Poetry
Coward

So go now;
Innocently disappearing
into an oblivion
that
I will never know.

Just go ahead;
Dive right on in
And join others similar to you;
Spineless.

These others who have been slapped...
Hard.
And no matter how stinging
the demand,
They- and now you, too-
Disregard chivalry.

Where did it all go?
Care-free golden days...
I swear I just had them.
A time full of
smiles,
peals of laughter...
freckled-nose grins.

Now I feel like my
happiness
has taken lessons from Houdini...
Hiding in the shadows,
letting the darkness pummel me;
And then,
Innocently reappearing, all smiles,
like nothing could possibly be wrong.

It's been said.
I've been caught.
All of a sudden I'm surrounded
by people I once called friends.
The air around me thickens
and the circle of people
surrounding me
fade away
into mere shadows...
And the show begins.
The light flicks on
covering me- and only me-
in the harsh glow of reality.
And the silouhettes that surround me
-those "friends"-
begin to talk.
The whispers slide through the dark,
their sounds penetrate
the caging light,
teasing it,
poking at it,
but never quite entering it.
I cower in my cage
of light;
rays of hatred
keeping me chained in the center.
My heart pounding,
fear coursing through my vains,
face growing crimson
as the snide comments
pester me,
pinpricks gathering together
to form a knife,
driving into my heart,
making me pay
for daring.
