LAP Chapter 1 Algebra 2

In this chapter the student will review the essential skills and concepts in algebraic and statistical settings.  The students will learn

1.       represent and interpret data

2.       the order of operations

3.       the sets and properties of real numbers

4.       solve equations and inequalities

5.       solve equations and inequalities with absolute values

6.       graph solution sets

8/12      The student will learn classroom policies and procedures, and he will receive the student handbook.  HOMEWORK:  What are your feelings towards math—positive or negative?  What has made your math teachers good/bad?  What is the best piece of advice you can give me on how to teach you? (On a separate piece of paper)

8/13      The student will learn the description of the stem and leaf plot, line plot and other data representing graphs.  He will then define central tendencies through mean, median, and mode.  After collecting data from the class, the student will plot and describe the central tendencies of this information.   HOMEWORK: p.23-25 #14—17, 19, 23—27

8/16      The student will learn the number sets and place numbers in the appropriate set.  The student will also evaluate expressions after learning the order of operations.  HOMEWORK: p.11#38—43 all, p.17#21—30 multiples of 3, 32—37 all, and p.8 Exploration

8/17      The student will learn the properties of real numbers and he use them to simplify expressions.  The students will further enhance their knowledge of the properties by playing a game of memory.  HOMEWORK: p.17-18#38—48 all, 53—57 odd, 58, 64—66 all and show that  for all values of

—Justify each step using the properties of addition and multiplication.

8/18      The student will translate verbal expressions into algebraic expression and vice versa.  He will also solve equation for a value or variable using the properties learned the day before. HOMEWORK: p.31-33#19—24, 35, 36, 40, 45, 48, 52—54, 64—66 and

define absolute value with words and by picture.

8/19      The student will review the definition of absolute value, and he will then use the definition and the properties of real numbers to solve equations containing an absolute value.  HOMEWORK: p.41-42#30—34, 38—41, 44, 53—56 and prepare for tomorrow’s quiz.

8/20      The student will take a quiz over the learned material.  HOMEWORK: Do the graphing calculator activity on pages 35 & 36.

8/21      The student will review the definitions of the inequalities, and he will then solve inequalities and graph the solution sets on a number line.  HOMEWORK: p.47-48 #27—29, 34—37, 39, 42, 46—48; tell whether this statement is true or false: Multiplying both sides of an inequality by the same number always produces an equivalent inequality.  Then justify your answer.  Explain the difference between solving  and

8/22      The student will define and graph compound inequalities and he will then learn to solve inequalities containing absolute values.  HOMEWORK: p.53#18—26, 34—38, 43—45; how are absolute value inequalities containing a “<” or “” symbol solved differently from those containing a “>” or “”?
