USTAD
AMIR KHAN
Dear
Friends,
This
is Page 2 of my web page on Ustad Amir Khan.
I posted my site in 2002 and I have collected a lot more details about
Ustadji since then and want to share them with you in this page. I discovered a number of useful websites too
during this period and admirers of Ustadji’s music would find many valuable
nuggets like mp3s, videos, photos, articles, etc., in these sites. Regular Internet users among you might have
already visited these sites, if not, here goes…
Patrick Moutal’s
site on Indian Classical Music. Here
you can download videos and actually see Ustadji singing Malkauns and Rageshree. A Documentary on Ustadji can also be viewed
here. This site also has digitized
versions of 78rpm records, and Ustadji’s renditions of Adana, Chandrakauns
and Ramdasi Malhar can also be downloaded. Happy viewing…
The Toronto Gharana Amir Khan Memorial Page: A
Tribute by John Campana. John
Campana’s site has a biography; articles on Ustad Amir Khan’s music by
stalwarts like Pt. Nikhil Bannerjee, Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta, and others and an
article by Ustadji himself on Tarana; a beautiful discography; lovely
photographs; and bandishes.
Ustad Amir Khan
page at musicalnirvana.com You
will find a brief profile of Ustadji, a discography, and articles on Ustadji.
Rajan Parrikar’s Indian Classical Music site. Sri Parrikar has posted his
wonderful collection of articles on Indian Classical Music here. Each article is based on a particular Raga
and is studded with rare photographs and even rarer instrumental and vocal
samples of Ragas played and sung by some of the topmost musicians of the
country – both past and present. One
can listen to some of Ustadji’s hitherto unreleased gems like Multani, Bairagi, Bhatiyar, Bhimpalasi,
Gaud Malhar, Hem Kalyan, Jaijaivanti, Maru Kalyan,
etc., online. All these are not in one
place and one has to read all the articles to locate Ustadji’s renditions in
each, and believe me, that is one thing that makes this site so special…
Positive
Music site. This is Don Robertson’s site on
Positive Music and it has a section on Indian Music, wherein you can download
renditions from stalwarts such Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandita Gangubai Hangal,
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, The Ali Brothers, and wonderful Dhrupad renditions
by the Dagars. Ustad Amir Khan’s Darbari,
Komal Rishabh Asavari and Yaman can be downloaded from this site.
Rajeev
Patke’s Music Page dedicated to the 78rpm Era. This site is
a tribute to the 78rpm era, the age of the early phase of recording in
India. According to the site around
half a million such records were issued in India and most of them are
lost. Prof. Patke has painstakingly put
together this site, which includes a list of artistes and their records
available in archives. Brief mp3
extracts are also given “in
order to give listeners an idea of what musicians achieved within the limits of
the 78rpm format. The sound is rough,
but the interest of the music almost transcends the mere sound - if one can
accept the paradox.” Ustadji’s admirers
can see a rare photograph of his wearing a turban and sporting a moustache
(probably an early Ustad Abdul Karim Khan phase in his life!) in the page
dedicated to Ustad Amir Khan.
