No More Anakin's Bushy Eyebrows
My recennt viewing of Return of the Jedi in DVD caught me off guard when aside from seeing Hayden in the place of the original Anakin Skywalker actor in the ghost scene, I also noticed that on the unmasking scene Anakin's bushy eyebrows were missing. Immediately afterwards I consulted the web, and was able to verify that the things I saw were indeed true. (This new edition DVD, in fact, had been released as early as last year.) Changes to a film completed more than twenty years ago clearly were made to accommodate new developments from the more recently made prequel episodes. I point out specifically the removal of old Anakin's bushy eyebrows. I remember those eyebrows well because the first time I watched Return of the Jedi and saw the unmasking scene, it was Darth Vader's thick eyebrows that made the most impression on me. At that time when the choice of who to play Anakin for the prequels still hadn't been made, one thing was already certain for me: whoever the actor was, he sure had to have lots of eyebrows. But of course I watched Episode III, and saw that when Darh Vader burned, his hair and eyebrows also went. Furthermore, it was very clear that he had no eyebrows when (skin burns still raw and all) he was put inside his armor and mask. A big inconsistency therefore it would be for a man who had burned all his hair (presumably to the roots) in Ep. III should suddenly have eyebrows on such bushy proportions in Ep. VI. This inconsistency was corrected when in the new edition of the DVD, George Lucas did away with those bushy eyebrows. What we ultimately learn from this move is that a work previously made and completed can be altered if required by a more recent one, especially if such alteration makes the more recent work appear better. The old work conforms to the new. |
