Why Women Have Love Affairs

By Cathryn Conroy, Netscape News Editor Why DO women have illicit love affairs? It's the cave woman in them. Women are more likely to have love affairs when they are fertile, according to an article published in The Economist. The theory is that by having children with different genes, mothers lower the risk of all the kids dying at once from a similar cause, according to researchers Steven Gangestad, Randy Thornhill, and Christine Garver of the University of New Mexico. While their husbands may be wonderful men and the relationship solid and stable, wives may still be susceptible to an occasional act of adultery. These three researchers have developed a fascinating theory: Women are most likely to have an illicit love affair when they are fertile, but men are most likely to resist such an adulterous desire when the risk of pregnancy is greatest.

The researchers point to previous studies that have shown women are more sexually aware when they are ovulating. They may express this in how they dress or how they act--or both. And all of this is directed at other men--not their "primary partner." (Poor guy.) "It is not the case, therefore, that women simply feel more sexy when they are fertile. That sexiness is directed specifically towards infidelity," notes The Economist. But the primary partner isn't totally clueless. He is aware of it all--usually subconsciously. His reaction? Typically, he will pay significantly more attention to his female partner when she is fertile, probably in an attempt to distract her from other men. The researchers have a name for this phenomenon: mate guarding.

afterthoughts

"Maybe the search for perfection is just an excuse to avoid commitment to another human being." It seems that this is sort of true and applies to the previous article. For some reason, people are in a constant state of trying to find something better, whether it's with their mate or not is up for debate. However, you tend to hear 'find someone better' or something to that effect. It's nothing but a cop out to me, bottom line. I wish I had the end all answer here, but I don't, just my opinion. I don't like to see someone put their heart into making another person happy just to hear 'you can find someone better.' I could not imagine what it's like to deal with an unfaithful person, and I hope it stays that way, regardless of ovulation schedules. whatever, let's talk about something more upbeat....

March 2002 - Masturbating mugger pulls it off again by Phillip Messing

The so-called "masturbating mugger" - a fiend who stalks young women before robbing them of their cash and jewelry and sexually satisfying himself in their presence - has struck for the 14th time, police said yesterday. The sicko's latest exploit occured shortly before 9:15pm. Tuesday, when he followed a 17-year-old victim to her apartment on University Avenue, in the Kingsbridge section of The Bronx, where he got on an elevator with her and demanded her money and jewelry, police said. After the frightened victim complied with the suspect's demands, he began masturbating in front of her before running off, sources said. That crime appears to have been committed by the same depraved suspect who's been on the loose since January 23. 1
