Purple Clone Wars Dress

This dress is based of the gorgeous purple dress Padme wears in Episode 1 of the Clone Wars cartoons. Purple is my favorite color, so much that I bought some fabric a few years ago to make a purple version of the picnic dress, and got as far as making the corset base and top. I decided when the cartoon came out that the pattern I was working on could be easily modified to make this outfit, so I'm taking a crack at it!

Supplies:

Lilac lining - 3 yds.
Lilac metallic chiffon - 4 1/2 yards
Purple embroidered chiffon - 3 yards
Lilac chiffon - 3 yards
Lilac heat-treated chiffon (plastic wrap) - 4 yards
Lilac shimmery voile - 2 yards
Lilac patterned voile - 3 yards
Heavy interfacing - 1 yd
Cream nylon net - 6 yards
Muslin - 8 yards
White Cotton Duck - 1 yard
Boning
Fabric Paint

Procedure:
1. Corset -

I started by cutting the corset out of the duck. I zig-zagged the edges of every piece, then sewed the pieces together. I pressed the seams and press them open, and used the zig-zag stitch to hold them open. Basically I zig-zag over the edge zig-zags to hold them down. I used a scrap piece of duck to make 5/8" wide tapes (like making bias tape, but on the straight of the fabric, I didn't want it to stretch) and sewed it onto each seam to make a boning channel. I boned each seam with 1/2" wide spring steel boning, and boned the opening (which is on the side) with 1/4" spring steel boning. Then I sewed together the lining, and then the shimmery voile, which was interfaced with the heavy interfacing to make it stiff. This will be the base of the cover.

Update: I've sewed diamonds on the corset of a couple different fabrics. The three fabrics in the skirt, the 'plastic wrap' from the sleeves, and the chiffon from the train ruffles are all in there, in a few different combinations. I started out with a standard diamond, but as I worked around the curves I had to start cutting custom pieces to fit what I needed. I'm ordering silver and purple seed beads to outline the diamonds and do the top and bottom "lillies" on the front and back. I'm also going to add something to about half of the diamonds. I've got some silver-lined green beads to do some green vines, and a few different purples to do some flowers, or scattered beads, or paisley patterns, and I'll also do a few with sequins. The five different fabrics are nice, but it's still a little homogenous, and I want to add something to it. I'll have to do this before I sew the pieces together so that the beads are only on the front. I also modified all the pieces so the corset opens on the right side of the back instead of the center. I'm going to put lacing rings in the base to tighten the corset, then hook the fashion fabric over the top so the lacing doesn't show.

2. Skirt -

I cut 3 yard lengths of the metallic chiffon, purple embroidered chiffon, lining, and lilac chiffon, and did a narrow rolled hem on each. I layered them together a few different ways, finally deciding on the lining, then the shimmer chiffon, then the embroidered chiffon. I set the lilac chiffon aside because it just didn't do anything for the skirt and I didn't want the extra layer. I then basted the pieces together to keep them from sliding, cut the top off the embroidered chiffon so that it lined up with the other fabrics (the lining and shimmery chiffon were both 45", the embroidered chiffon was 60"), and zig-zagged the tops together to finish them. I gathered them by hand with a 1" stitch. The pics on the left are close-ups of the finished layered fabrics.

3. Train -

I mocked the train in muslin, then cut it from the patterned voile. I also cut out a double-layer of nylon net to give it some body. I quilted the four pieces together, layering them: voile, net, net, muslin. Then I sewed the two sides together and bound all the edges in lavender bias tape.

I cut 6"circles from the sparkly chiffon, the regular chiffon, and the heat-treated chiffon with a rotary cutter and cutting mat, then drew a line of fabric paint around the edges of each to keep them from ravelling. I think the actual drawing calls for more of a teardrop shape with the point at the bottom, but I liked the look of circles better from what I've seen people do of the Celebration Gown from Ep. I, so I cut circles instead. I used four different types of Tulip fabric paint: glittering crystal, glittering silver, glittering confetti, and iridescent silver. I tried to keep an even number of each fabric/paint combination, but I don't want a pattern to emerge, so I kept it kind of random as well, not keeping exact track. I also made less of the glittering silver and glittering confetti, proportionally, since they look simmilar until you are up close. 300 and some circles later I started sewing them. I ran a line of stitching along the top 1'4 of the circles, which I chose randomly. Each was then gathered to fit the train. Hopefully I'll have them sewn on by the end of the week!
