John's Guide to Making A Successful Swept Flying Wing

Note: These are my opinions and are based on the type of model and airfoils I have used. They may differ from other information you find on the internet.

So, you still want to make your own flying wing after reading about my sagas. Heres how to do it.

1. Don't try and make a swept wing without washout. You might as well make an unswept wing if the airfoil you are planning to use doesn't require washout and save yourself a lot of hassle.

2. Don't make the ailerons too small. On my 3rd model this appeared to be a problem. About 1/2 span seems OK. 1/3 span would be too small, although I see some designs on the internet with this much.

3. With 2 degrees of washout, which I feel is a good amount, (washout has an anhedral effect) you would probably still need 1 degree anhedral.

4. Make some fins with poper airfoil, camber on the inside. This is important. The fins are holding back a lot of pressure from the wing. They aren't doing the job that a fin does on a normal plane. Fins should be at aerodynamic zero angle

5. Read all you can on the net. Unfortunately some of my favourite sites don't seem to be going at the moment. Here's one of my favourites -
Andy Macdonalds Website.

6. Check your health insurance to make sure it will cover you for time in a mental institution.
