This was my first electric model. I had seen a Radical RC Edge 540 model and thought, "I could build one of those real easy". It was just a foam wing with a solid sheet balsa fuse and tail. So, I looked the model up on the net, got the wingspan and area and scketched something out on a piece of paper. Initially I used 8 Kan 650's for power and it was a bit heavy, around 375 grams. I tried to lighten by cutting sections out of the wing (as shown in this photo) but it didn't really make much difference.

I later upgraded to 3 cell 880mah Lipo and this improved the performance and duration went up to 15 minutes. Overall not a bad first attempt. I flew it quite a bit and had a lot of enjoyment out of it.

One problem I had was that the slightest heavy landing the fuselage, which is just a piece of 2.5mm  balsa, split along the grain. I just glued it back together but it was a real nuisance.
You could do better, using the same type of construction, but I decided to use a completely built up model for my second attempt.
