A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
Millions of books have been written over the years. Do you think this was done overnight? Definitely not. The writers persevered even though it was hard to get ideas. All writers suffer from writer's block. There would also have been so many other demands on them, but they have managed to add to the shelves in the many libraries throughout the world. Who knows, one day your writings may also be among the writings of the acclaimed writers of the world?
In this last issue of This & That, you will be able to read a factual essay. Don't attempt this in the examination unless you know all the facts about an issue.

Recycling

People use a lot of products everyday and they throw away just as much, or even more. Just look at how quickly the dumpster fills up when it comes to take the rubbish from our backyards. The more we use, the more we tend to waste. In order to make these products, natural resources like water, trees and minerals had to be made use of. So if we want to save our environment from destruction, we have to practise recycling.

Recycling is a good practice because it reduces the demand for raw materials. The main materials that can be recycled are plastics, glass and paper. To encourage the habit of recycling, the government in Malaysia has set up collection bins at strategic locations like shopping malls and schools. The general public can do their part to save the environment by putting their old bottles, plastic containers and newspapers into the respective bins. The items collected in these bins are normally sent to the factories to be recycled. Much of this is also exported and so recycling has become a big business.

However, the task of saving the environment and recycling does not only concern those who do it as a business. Every individual can do his part to save the environment. There are a myriad things that one could do. We should try to throw away less things every day. We can use old greeting cards to make book marks or even recycle the old cards to make attractive new ones. We do not need to throw away our old clothes. Instead we could give them away to some more deserving people. We should not burn grass and twigs. Instead we could make a compost heap in our garden. Where buying is concerned, we should only buy what we need. When we buy items, we should make sure that they are long lasting. If  the product gets spoilt, we should try to get it repaired.

Recycling then is a good habit. When we recycle we are helping to conserve the resources of the earth so that future generations can enjoy what we are enjoying now. We should all then make the effort to recycle items whenever and by whatever means we can.
