A Word from the Editor
Words are so very important. They are like the balm that can soothe a troubled soul. Words can encourage, can help one to grow with confidence and they also help build one's self-esteem.
On the other hand, used wrongly, words can hurt, disappoint, frustrate and lower the integrity of another, so we have to be very careful with our choice of words. Always remember that what is spoken can be forgotten, but what is written can always be used as proof against us. In this issue, I would like to share with you a simple way of improving our writing. How? Simple. Read on to find out more.

WORDS TO COMMUNICATE AND EXPRESS OURSELVES

It is without a doubt that without words we would not be able to communicate with others. We need words to build relationships through our speech and writing. How can we improve our writing? The answer is simple.
Read! Read! Read!
However reading is just a passive action and we will be like the sponge that just absorbs and absorbs if we just carry on reading. We must, therefore, also make it a point to write. Write letters to friends and even to the editors of newspapers and magazines. It is in writing that we will find new ways of expressing ourselves in the language because there are a myriad ways of saying the same thing.
When you are thirsty and need a cool drink, what could you say?
A:
I need something to quench my thirst.
B: If I don't get a drink soon, I will die.
C: My throat is dry.
D: A tall cool glass of lemonade would be nice!
And there are so many other ways of expressing our desire for a drink. We should therefore try to experiment with words and the best way to do this is to write down our thoughts and ideas. That is why composition writing is so important in the exams. In fact, in the exams, this section carries the most marks.
The section on Related Websites has been held over for this month and instead there is a simple composition written by a ten-year old from a Chinese medium school. It is a simple topic but it sounds refreshing because of his choice of words. I hope it will inspire you to take up your pen and put your thoughts into words.

My BiRtHdAy PrEsEnT
My father gave me a computer as a gift for my birthday recently. I was taken aback as a computer is very expensive. I jumped joyfully because I could now send e-mail messages to my friends.
The new computer is bigger than the old one. Everyday after finishing my homework, I will play computer games.
My father has advised me to get information from the Web so I also surf the Net to gain more knowledge. Besides that, I can use the printer and the scanner to do my projects for school.
I am very happy with my birthday present. I have promised my father that I will make good use of my computer.

Quote of the month

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty
said in a  rather scornful tone,
"it means just what I choose it to mean,
- neither more nor less."
