Adirondack Camping

What better way to stay in the mountains than setting up your own camp and settling in? Whether it's a patch of open ground deep in the woods or a full-powered spot with your Winnebago parked on it, there is a place for you to call home for a little while in the Adirondacks. Pick your kind of camping and check out the pointers below.

Totally Rough

• You must set up camp at least 150' from any body of water,road, or trail except at state-designated or privately-owned sites
• You must limit your stay at any campsite to 3 days; after which you must move.
• Camping above 4000' is PROHIBITED.
• About half the land here is privately owned. Ask around, get permission to camp first.
• Don't forget that it's usually colder up here than it is downstate (even as close as Glens Falls). Pack for cooler weather than ordinary.
• Learn & practise Low Impact Camping all the time.
• Don't get injured or lost. Walking 150' off trail has done it to folks before. This is a great reason to Hire a Guide!
• Bring a bear rope and use it.
• Safeguard your supplies from other critters: coons, porcupines, & mice to name a few.

State Campgrounds

For car campers, the Adirondacks are liberally sprinkled with fine campsites managed by NYS. Most (but not all) are accessable by car. Some require a short walk from a parking lot. A few must be reached by boat. Here's the current list...
