Before you head out, make certain you know how to read a map, use a compass, and have a carefully developed plan of action. If you want to get off the path but you're uncertain of your own skills, Hire a Guide to take you on a trailless trek and teach you the sklls you need to do it on your own. Bushwhacking is a great experience, but it's a serious undertaking. Most of the deaths that occur in the Adirondacks are the result of people traveling off trails.
