1968 Triumph Bonneville Restoration A brief history: Bike was purchased at a swap meet in Waco Texas in 1994 for $1100 with the help of Keith and Brian of Big D Cyle - of Dallas Tx. This is my 1st bike, and up until Fall of `03 my only bike. 1998: after three top end jobs and approx. 80,000 miles the bottom end went out when the left main bearing was starved of oil due to the sludge trap on the crank filling up over the last 30+ years. At this point I decided to do the whole bike - also the time I started making and selling my T shirts. The project took off quickly enough but due to the little things lasted a year and a half. Engine work was aided by Wolf Cycles - of Baltimore MD, and Crossroads Cycles - of Baileys Crossroads, VA. Click on the images for a larger shot.
Condition as purchased, and for a couple of years thereafter. A great College bike I might add!
All the guts taken out - near the point of no return, begining of the end, end of the beginning etc.
Frame after powdercoating
Two sides of a freshly rebuilt motor
6) I found the best way to drop an engine in is to lay the frame down over the engine, while on its side. 7-10 ) Installing the new harness, fender, wheel, and forks. Cheap work bench is comprised of two big foam pieces and a carpeted cinder block.
11) Starting to look like a bike again! 12-13) Completed bike at the 2002 Triumph Come Home Rally sans: new polished stainless steel spokes and restored hubs and spools (2003). ................ Next up is my `72 Bonneville 650 V - yes a bit of a rare orig. `72 Bonnie 5 speed - bobber. I should begin to have pics soon.
