9. What sets horror films apart from other genres?

(Jeff Solano) Everything comes from 2 emotions and all other emotions fall in between these 2. one side of the scale you have Love and on the far other end there is Fear. Most people don't like to delve into the Fear side of things for too long but they can't resist. Horror movies are irresistible. Everyone loves to be scared but then loves to be reassured that everything is OK and it's just a horror film and not reality. One thing that horror fans shouldn't resist is our website which is located at www.nextvictimthemovie.com Have fun!
(Timothy Gates) I think it's the fun factor. Most of the horror films I watch have a quality of silliness to them. Why do we love vampires and werewolves? The same reason kids love Dinosaurs. You show me a kid that would love a T-rex if it was alive and trying to eat him. Not going to happen. So this to me is the major thing. When you watch a horror film you know it's simply about entertainment. Dramas don't do this, they usually try to hit home with some emotion or another. Comedy often does this as well (which I don't like). How many times do you watch a horror film and say "Don't go in there!" but they always go in there and...well, we can be thankful because if they didn't it would be incredibly boring. I also think that in this respect that it touches a part of our brain that is linked directly to childhood memories when we used to sit around and tell scary stories and jump out and yell BOO!! I think there is something inside of us that says "that was fun" when we watch horror and helps us forget about the work day for a while.
(M. Sky Chamberlain) Each genre pokes at different emotions.....many of them play with a variety of them. The Horror genre hit's our primal fear chord...our basic "fight or flight" response........it aims to repulse......to make you cringe.....to force you to jump .....to hide in the comfort of another or under a large blanket! Yet, in some films even these safe places are exploited....to imply that there is no safe place! You can not run! You can not hide! Horror films represent a loss of the basic security that we have all constructed around us. The confrontation with the "unknown" and the exploration of every phobia known and unknown to us. It's benefit beyond the apparent emotional roller coaster ride, is that in the end we have faced fear. In many cases we may have over come fear. In my opinion any time you are able to do this you become a stronger person....not like a superman....but emotionally you are solid.

10. If you had to give advice to someone interested in making a movie, what advice would you give them?

(Jeff Solano) I would have to say this. No matter what you have to do, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP. Plain and simple. There will be obstacles that fall into your path that you never dreamed of. You'll tell yourself repeatedly through the course of the film that you must be fucking nuts to be a filmmaker and let alone make a HORROR FILM!!! Keep on creating. It can and will happen if you have your heart set on it! Let's make another horror movie!!!

(M. Sky Chamberlain) No matter what anyone says you are the architect of your future. In many cases you are the only one who truly understands your idea. If you believe in yourself and are determined, you can accomplish anything. Surround yourself with positive people who are going some place. Educate yourself on the film-making process....there's a lot to it beyond Writing, Directing, and Acting....and no matter how much you prepare, there are a million things that you will learn along the way....film making is an ever changing, on-going learning experience...and the more that you are involved with different people in the field the more you will grow to understand. Remain humble in this notorious domain of the "ego".....in my experience it is this attribute more than any other that will open doors for you. "May the force be with you."
