| 10. Do you prefer to play the hero or the villain? Oh, I dont know. I try not to make that distinction. I want to approach any character as a human being, first and foremost, but I know thats pretty nave, considering that most things are written with a very obvious moral scheme this is good, thats not. I dont think my idea of a hero would be the same as most peoples and I doubt Id be anybody ideas of a hero! So I guess that means Im stuck playing villains. I must say I do a really good psychopath. Some people think I am a psychopath! I also get cop a lot. Same difference. 11. What's next for Daryl Haney? Right now I just want to finish my novel and see it into print. Ill probably end up publishing under an assumed name. Its a really worthy book, not a genre piece, but the second someone with no imagination looks me up on the IMDb its going to be dismissed away. Oh, this cant possibly be any good! Have you see the things hes done?! I dont understand why no one has that attitude about commercials. Look at him! Hes a hack! He did an ad for Pepsi! What, is an ad for Pepsi really all that better than Friday the 13th? Im afraid it is in most peoples minds. Isnt corporate culture just grand?! In terms of film, I really dont what the future holds. I may not have one, actually. Im no longer that comfortable with my physical appearance, so actings kind of painful in a lot of ways. I hate getting older! I dont care how narcissistic that is. You always hear people in their thirties and older say, Oh, Im much happier now than I was in my twenties! Id never go back to that! Well, I would. I think most people past their early thirties are spiritually dead. They never go out, they never investigate anything new, they just sit around the house with their significant others, still playing the same music they were listening to in their twenties, assuming they play music at all. Well, thats not me. Its not a matter of hanging onto something thats gone. Thats just the kind of propaganda used to enforce strict guidelines: this is young, thats not. Americans just love that kind of thing. We cant bear ambiguity! But Im still reading and listening and educating myself and, most important of all, Im still thinking, and Im sure thats never going to change. And that may just render me unemployable as a writer. They dont want you past a certain age anyway. This business is run by young people who were born middle-aged and who, ironically, think theyre experts in the matter of being young. Let me tell you, Ive been around Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks and hes over fifty at this point and younger in spirit than any movie exec half his age! Anyway, Ill probably just keep plugging away, possibly under a new name, but always with the hope that, one day, I can finally work on a good movie. Darren Aronofsky, Im calling your name! And, thanks, Jason, for requesting my humble thoughts and a good list of questions. |
