I also tried a new style of pattern this year on some real pumpkins. It's called "pumpkin inside a pumpkin." The carvings turned out really well, but I messed up on choosing the sizes of the pumpkins. (or, maybe I didn't shave enough "meat" from the outer walls.) I had to cut the outside pumpkin into pieces to put the smaller one inside. I also shaved the skin off of the back of the inner pumpkin. Then I used toothpicks to hold the outer pieces together. I think I should have carved a bigger pattern on the outer pumpkin, too. (Hey, maybe the inner pumpkin would have fit better...) :-/
