2004 Pumpkins

Mouse-over the images to turn off the lights

This year I made lights for my foam pumpkins. Check out my Props Pages for the details. Also, I had several kids tell me that my haunted house was "tight." I had one lady take my picture, and some guy videoed my setup. He really liked it...said that the pumpkins were really good.

King of Jacks This is the carving from 2003. It turned out pretty well - with only a few minor flaws. One of the flaws was in the pattern. Can you find them?
Deadly Diva This one is my 2004 carving. It only took about 20 minutes to carve thanks to my wife. She got me a battery-operated saw. I carved everything but the eyes with it.
Grave Robbers I also tried a new style of pattern this year on some real pumpkins. It's called "pumpkin inside a pumpkin." The carvings turned out really well, but I messed up on choosing the sizes of the pumpkins. (or, maybe I didn't shave enough "meat" from the outer walls.) I had to cut the outside pumpkin into pieces to put the smaller one inside. I also shaved the skin off of the back of the inner pumpkin. Then I used toothpicks to hold the outer pieces together. I think I should have carved a bigger pattern on the outer pumpkin, too. (Hey, maybe the inner pumpkin would have fit better...) :-/

Next year will be different. I'm going to try to grow my own pumpkins, and have a lot of them to practice on so I can get it right.
