Maltese-specific Books
Can anyone recommend a good Maltese-specific book? I purchased a book simply
entitled "Maltese" by t.f.h. Publications, advertised as being the
'best-selling Maltese book'. What a jip! The book is maybe 1/5 Maltese, i.e.
standard, other easily obtainable information; the rest is just generic dog
info. I did look at several books on Maltese at the last dog show I attended
but found them to be either dated or lacking in basic information such as
diet, allergies specific to our breed, skin sensitivities (the
itchies), training, etc.; or they seem to be written more for the breeder
and exhibitor. While that info. is good, what I'm looking for is the
information that the person new to the breed needs. Like whether or not to
give them turkey! (white meat only ok in small portions occasionally; but
rest is too rich, and potentially dangerous; who knew?) or about the
particular skin ailments prone to our little white doggies... how they tend
to be finicky eaters... you know, all the! little quirks we love about them! Thx ;-)

- I have read *just about* every book ever published on Maltese. You
will not find the information in any of these books as up to date
nor as informative as some of the web pages you are reading right
now over the internet. The WWW is by far your best source
of information on Maltese or any other breed. The internet is also
getting better daily and truely has a wealth of information on any
subject.
- Yes, I agree Jay... but I can't always be on-line, searching for topics,
etc. Going on the internet, at least for me, is not usually a time-efficient
thing. Besides, I'm a book person. I like to surround myself with them (and
little white dogs ;-D) in bed or on the couch. I use them as a reference,
refering to them often. Hey, I know! (As if you're not busy enough) Why
don't you gather the information that's being posted on your message boards
and slam it all into book form! With a little creativity (and good editing)
you might have yourself a best-seller! I'm a graphic designer, I could help
you with the layout!

- Have you read the Maltese book by Kathy Digiacomo and Barbara Berquist? I
think it is titled "The Maltese" too. I think this is the best "most
recent" book. Both of these women have been breeding Maltese for years and
years and have been members of the American Maltese Association for as long.
Jay is right though there is not a book out there with those little things
that are breed specific.

- Laurie,
That is exactly what we had in mind to do. It would be one
of the best books on the subject of Maltese :-), we have saved
every post since our site went up about 8 months ago and have
literally hundreds of excellent questions and some of the best
answers to go with them. All authored by who knows best but
real everyday "Maltese people". Who better to know, right?I may take you up on the graphic design offer :-D , I'll contact by email about it. Thanks.

- Margaret Stuber (my Mother) has written two maltese books:
"I Love Maltese" and "Breeding Small Dogs (Especially Maltese)" She has 40+ years of experience with the breed, including breeding and finishing numerous champions. These books are still available, but, alas, I cannot quote a price at this time (my guess is about $15.00 each, but that is only a guess. If you (or anyone else) is interested, please e-mail me (my mother is not on the Net), and I will obtain prices and shipping information, and send you the information. These two books, especially the first, are as specific to the maltese breed as I have ever seen.
