Happiness at Tucalota Springs
As I mentioned on the Abode page, I currently live in a travel trailer.  However, this is not the first time I've lived in an RV.  During the Fall of 1987, I experienced the happiest four months of my life living in a 30-foot travel trailer with my wife and two small toddlers underneath the old oaks at Sage, Ca.   We bought the trailer (which had a tip-out in the living room) and had it pulled to Tucalota Springs,  a wonderful RV park in the hills of Sage, about 15 miles south of Hemet.  The Sage-area is beautiful, and I became intoxicated with it; all I wanted to do was be outside, under the trees, or sitting around a campfire at night.  It was the closet to Nature that I had ever felt.  It was a very magical time in my life!

The experience was so magical, that I jettisoned just about everything that had to do with electronics and technology:  We got rid of our 20-inch television, Atari player and video games, a hundred video discs and a video player, most of our music albums and video tapes; just about everything.  We bought a small 13-inch black and white television just to keep up on the news.  Sage was paradise found!

One of the most wonderful experiences I remember was waking up to the sight of cougar tracks marking up the area right in front of our door!  During the night, a male and female mountain lion with a small cub had come for a visit just feet from where we were sleeping!  In another instance, I was taking the trash out to the garbage bin on the other side of the park; it was dark and as I was walking beneath the oak trees, I saw a large cat sitting on the dumpster.  I remarked, "Wow, what a large cat!"  It didn't occur to me that it might be a wild animal!  As I got closer, the feline jumped down off the bin and ran off; as it fled under an arc light, I couldn't make out a tail; it was a bobcat!   And of course, the sound of a pack of coyotes "whooping" it up just on the other side of the hill from where we stood one night, was an eerie experience.
Unfortunately, Tucalota Springs now appears closed.  On June 2, 2006, I visited Hemet briefly while I was on vacation and made the drive up into the hills to experience Tucalota Springs once again.  I was shocked to find a locked gate at the entrance to the RV park.  How disappointing.
