ObGameShow

If you're a regular poster to alt.tv.game-shows this may be a familiar sight to you. Of course if you're not, just keep reading - it may peak your interest.

If you're wondering what this means, here's an explanation from Chris Lemon:

The Ob- prefix is a long-standing UseNet tradition which
means "obligatory content". It used to be used in messages
that for the most part were off-topic, to provide a small
amount of ON-topic information so nobody could flame you for
being off-topic in a newsgroup. So in alt.tasteless, after a
description of one's very tasteful dinner party, one might add:

ObTasteless: And afterwards I puked the whole thing up in green
greasy chunks.

(A very tame example, and not nearly the level of descriptiveness
necessary to pass for quality in a.t., but you get the idea.)

Of course, like most everything in UseNet, it's grown horribly
out of control and it's original intended meaning has been thrown
to the wolves.

With that said, here's an archive of every ObGameShow in ATGS up until 1999. The rest will be filled in eventually. Following each post in non-bold font is the contributor.

1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002

1994

ObGameShow: I think I heard Ray mention Nicki Trebek on "Family Feud" the other day..please tell me they haven't given her Gino Wood's job permanently...
(Chris Lambert)

1995

ObGameShow: GSN's "Prime Games" theme ROCKS!
(Brian Hamburg)

ObGameShow: I wonder how many times Holly is gonna flip pricetags this week? And I wonder how many packages of Vicks chloroseptic cough drops will Gena show off? Holly, Gena... Do yo' thing!
(Jeremy Soria)

1996

ObGameShow: I haven't seen No Relation yet, and perhaps because of the reviews it's getting here, I'll probably skip it...
(Jeremy Soria)

1997

ObGameShow: $25kPyr used a condensed version of Franklin Gothic on its trilons, the same font PYL used on its game board. Super Password used a custom version of Machine for its Chyron graphics. Scrabble used boring old Helvetica. J! uses Korinna for its "answers", but I'd like to see the giant JEOPARDY! letters adapted to an entire font. Ditto the "needlepoint" font FF used for its ending credits.
(J Vincent)

ObGameShow: Nancy Cartwright's husband, William Warren Murphy, was one of the first day's impostors on Gordon Elliott's version of "To Tell the Truth."
(James Vipond)

See if you can catch a glimpse of the famous Diamond Head volcano that inspired a famous Bob Eubanks flop (ObGameShow).
[Dave Mackey; who is making me use brackets because he formatted his wrong. Grrrrr :-)]

ObGameShow: So how *is* Game Show Con Seven rolling along?
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow: Hasn't everyone from TNPiR '94 BUT Doug Davidson posed nude? (Don't count Burton... he's too respectable.)
(Brian Hamburg)

1998

ObGameShow: Does anyone here ever venture over to Talk City and play some of the chat games over there? My own fave currently is RidicWebtv....which is basically the Ridiculist but configured to make it easier for WebTvGeeks like myself
(Archie Leach)

ObGameShow: Back to local stuff.....but, Grand Rapids and not Lansing this time, are there *any* West Michiganders who remember the old bowling show that Channel 8 (WOTV) used to run, hosted by Warren Reynolds (who must be about 90 years old by now)--it aired around noon, on Saturday or Sunday, I don't recall.

I know it's been a few years since it aired.....

It featured husband-and-wife teams bowling against each other. I do remember that....

And sorry for all the really obscure stuff from the previous message......that was a bit....extended.....

(quit while you're ahead, Arch, quit while you're ahead....)

Okay
(Archie Leach)

ObGameShow: The costumes those dancers wore when they exploded a square on Davidson's "Hollywood Squares" never were that exciting...
(Brian Hamburg)

ObGameShow: For the benefit of those of us without GSN, can anybody put up some screen shots or audio clips of some of the new "look"?
(Brian Dominy)

ObGameShow: Bob Monkhouse is 70 today! (Chris Dickson)

ObGameShow: On Match Game '7x, when the chromakey spinning thing would spin at the end, the images would be like at the top of the show, as the thing spins around, we get shots of the stars. Except in times when something funny or exceptional happened, like Mark Goodson on Match Game '76 New Year's ep, or Gene Rayburn trying to wrestle a smile out of Richard Dawson on Match Game '78.
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow: Do you really want to see Craig Shoemaker do another game show? (Reply-to-Myself: Maybe if he wakes up...)
(Brian Hamburg)

ObGameShow: I just got more stuff for my collection... Anyone interested? (Password, Match Game PM, Card Sharks...)
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow: I really like Pyramid :)
(Robert Hutchinson)

ObGameShow: Game show contestants have to pay taxes on their winnings.
(was)

ObGameShow (plug)...I bought a second VCR of my own, so if some of you are interested in seeing my slowly growing list, I can send it your way. :)
(Tjssbh4)

ObGameShow: Match game starts in 9 days!
(was)

ObGameShow: Did we ever get Geoff to consider Net NoSpam: The Game Show? :)
(was)

ObGameShow: There's a Rock and Roll Jeopardy! marathon tonight on VH1 starting at 7pm Eastern Time... :)
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow: If it weren't for my original article, Chuck Donegan would never have found out about the Rock & Roll Jeopardy! marathon that's airing tonight on VH1...
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow Question. Why do some Goodson-Todman shows have Excutive Producers while some shows only have Producers?
(Richard Hudson)

ObGameShow At least there were no Goodson-Todman shows on Dumont =(
[Richard Hudson]

1999

ObGameShow: They can be faithful to the game all they want, but to seriously think [Family Feud] will succeed with Louie Anderson, of all people, is a stretch of the imagination IMO.
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow: What worked in '74 can work in '99. Now if the writers actually watched more of the old classic Match Game '7x...
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow - I know the length of every single commercial break during TPiR: 1'30", 2'05", 2', 1'45", 1'30", 2', 2', 2'45", 2'. And of course, the 2' from 11:58 to 12:00 after the show ends, for those whose VCRs are programmed to tape between 11:00 and 12:00.)
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow: on Bruce Forsyth's Play Your Cards Right on Friday, we had *two* questions where the contestants guessed the number in the survey question exactly correct; each such feat won the contestants a case of champagne. What did a similar feat earn on Card Sharks? "If Pearson were to revive Card Sharks, what would guessing the number exactly earn?"
(Chris Dickson)

ObGameShow: I guess that we will never see a Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart week on Password, if it is ever revived. *sigh*
(Jeremy Soria)

ObGameShow: Now you know the #1 reason why cable company XYZ won't carry GSN...Sony either won't pay, or won't pay enough, to satisfy the cable idiots.
(David Zinkin)

ObGameShow: I'll really regret asking a question this trivial one day, but are there any game shows with physical (as opposed to graphically- generated) scoreboards which use proportionally-spaced fonts?
(Chris Dickson)

ObGameShow: GSN SHOULD AIR PRESS YOUR LUCK!!!! Thank you. :-)
(David Zinkin)

Q*Bert was offered as the grand prize on (at least) one ep of Starcade! :)
(Stephan Mynarkiewicz)

OBGameShow. There's no dammed reason why 90's game shows can't or should'nt give away big money, so long as the money is'nt the main focus of the game or distracts from the game play or if the producers use a big jackpot to cover up a weak format If Mark Goodson could give away $28800 on Card Sharks and $20,000 on Match Game PM both in 1979, then Pearson, a multi billion dollar congolmerate can certantly afford to have returning champions for Feud or decent writers, panelists and $10,000 Super Match on Match Game. King World was willing to shell out big bucks to produce Hollywood Squares and they seem to be doing well in the ratings.
(Richard Hudson)

ObGameShowQuery: Does anyone know when the Illinois Lottery and the Ohio Lottery will have their respective 25th anniversary shows? Illinois' Luckiest was drawing numbers for the 25th anniv. show since the premiere of IL a year ago. About the Ohio Lottery, I believe Paul Tapie was to talk about the 25th anniv. show tonight or next week. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to see Cash Explosion Double Play tonight. Thanks!
(Mike Klauss)

ObGameShow: Has anyone heard any info about when the Endless Games TPiR home game will be released? I've heard dates ranging from July to October.
(Mike Klauss)

OBGameShow. I just taped a Card Shark's episode with a $10000+ win. Unfortunatly the tape ran out during the second Money Cards =(

Whats the biggest possible win in the Money Cards on Play Your Cards Right? Do they even have a Money Cards?
(Richard Hudson)

ObGameshow I finally bought a second VCR and I plan to start tape trading in a couple of weeks btu I am still going to send the password plus tape.

OH and how do you hook up one VCR to another?
(Richard Hudson)

OBGameSHow Well if NBC won't put Concentration back on the air or let GSN or anyone else lease the episodes or the format, they should at least sell it to SOMEONE, pereferably MGP AFTER Pearson sells off their television properties.
(Richard Hudson)

ObGameShow Reference. I think that GSN should put Blockbusters and Child's Play on the weekends.
(Richard Hudson)

ObGameShow: If you get GSN on channel 161, you're almost certainly using HITS.
(was)

ObGameShow: I loved Square One Squares/Challenge. :)
(Jeremy Soria)
