"BATTLESTARS" COMPARISON
David Livingston provides a synopsis of both versions
here.
For rules and a tribute mostly of the "New" version, check out J.W. Justice's page
here.

Stats - "Battlestars"
Broadcast history: NBC Daytime October 26, 1981 - April 23, 1982
Host: Alex Trebek Announcer: Rod Roddy

Stats - "The New Battlestars"
Broadcast history: NBC Daytime April 4, 1983 - July 1, 1983
Host: Alex Trebek Announcer: Charlie Tuna

HOST
The host for both versions was Alex Trebek. Although on a side note, I think Alex did a slightly better job on the "New" version.
ADVANTAGE: --- (0-0)

ANNOUNCER
Rod Roddy, although with not as much to do as Charlie Tuna, did a better job in my opinion.
ADVANTAGE: "Battlestars" (1-0)

GAME PLAY
Originally, all picks were random. In the "New" version, the first pick was random and all picks there on were done by the contestant. I think it gave the game a sense of unpredictability with the random picks.
ADVANTAGE: "Battlestars" (2-0)

BONUS ROUND
The "Battlestars Two" did not have anything to do with the main game, but was okay enough and was easy to play along with. The second bonus round had more to do with the game itself and offered more sensible payouts. $3,000 on the second attempt in the original really didn't cut it with me.
ADVANTAGE: "The New Battlestars" (2-1)

THE SET
The set remained pretty much the same from version to version, but I have to give a slight edge to the "New" version. More detail was added to the triangles, and they cleaned up the contestant area a bit.
ADVANTAGE: "The New Battlestars" (2-2)

MUSIC
The music remained the same in each version.
ADVANTAGE: ---

MISCELLANY
The idea of revealing the answers on the screen to the home audience and studio audience was nice, but in my opinion took something away from the show. Imagine "Hollywood Squares" with all of the material displayed before you.
ADVANTAGE: "Battlestars" (3-2)

And the winner is...

"Battlestars" - 3
"The New Battlestars" - 2

"Battlestars!!!!" I also have to mention I believe "Battlestars" deserved a little longer run. It was a unique game, despite being a ripoff of "Hollywood Squares" on the surface.
