~ Dance Studio - Nukuyaweni Outpost - July 3, 1993 - Noon ~
Jax disembarked from the tram and admired the view from the bluff. Julia had really done herself proud. The renovations were spectacular! Maybe it was for the best that she acquired this resort. All he would have done was package this place with a few other smaller properties, and sold it to a large hotel chain conglomerate for an obscene price. Julia's team had come up with a wonderful idea, an 'artists' resort! This place was going to be a phenomenal success. It was a perfect concept. It would appeal to the artistic snobs who would pay exorbitant prices to say they had 'created art', true magic by staying here! This was a great acquisition for someone who was willing to spend time nurturing it. He was more into bait and snatch. The quick return was his business specialty.
He backed away from the vista and headed towards the new building. Thomas had told him it was a combination Rehearsal hall / Ballroom / Dinning hall. This was where tomorrow's Gala was being held. He approached the hall and was heading towards the kitchen when the sounds of music drew him towards the auditorium. Thomas had told him that this place would be unoccupied until tomorrow! Not wanting to disturb anyone he was making his way out to the tram, when he spotted her standing all alone on the center of the stage and was transfixed.
She was so tiny and ethereal, yet her movements emphasized strength and elegance in its simplest form. He couldn't take his eyes off of her. Even from this distance when she was the size of music box dancer, she captured his full attention. He was afraid to move closer in case he broke the spell she was weaving. He leaned against the door fully enjoying the private performance he had stumbled upon. She must be rehearsing for tomorrow's Gala. Julia had pulled out all the stops! He had heard that a new band she had discovered was going to be performing. Apparently she had also discovered this bewitching dancer as well. She was breathtaking, he couldn't move his eyes from the stage. Her performance was simple, but the emotions she portrayed on stage were raw, taunt, heart wrenching. As her performance concluded and her voice trailed away on a breathy sob, he stood there in total silence.
He almost left, not wanting her to know that he had invaded her privacy. But then it seemed important to let her know how her performance had touched him. He began to applaud, softly at first and then more loudly as he slowly approached the stage. She looked up at him in shocked surprise, frozen to the center of the stage. She looked so helpless and hurt, he wanted to reach out to her and make everything better. As he covered the distance of this massive hall, her features became more clear and distinct. She transformed from the sprite like waif he had admired, into this living breathing siren of dance. She was even more lovely up close. Her hair was a dark shimmering cloud that accentuated her long graceful neck, her eyes were a deep dark soulful brown that could turn men into fools. And as if that weren't enough God placed an exclamation point on perfection by way of a tiny beauty mark just above her shapely infinitely kissable full lush lips. She looked nervous and ready to bolt at the earliest opportunity. He made certain to maintain eye contact with her, silently willing her to stay on the stage.
Brenda wanted to crawl into a corner and disappear! She couldn't believe her luck. Jax was applauding politely as she blushed in extreme embarrassment. He was still far enough away that if she fled, he might not be able to recognize her later. This is not how she wanted to see him again. She wanted to meet him on level ground, to be calm and collected when she explained to him who she really was. Not on her knees weeping, looking foolish! She rose planning to dart off the stage before he was able to see her clearly.
Jax ran towards the stage shouting as he saw that she was about to scurry, "STOP PLEASE! Don't go! Your performance was sheer perfection, I have to meet you." She stopped in confusion. Her gaze moving quickly back and forth from Jax to stage left. He continued to speak, more calmly, attempting to persuade her to stay. "Who are you? Are you performing that number at tomorrow's Gala? I'm sorry I startled you, but your performance was so bewitching I had to respond."
What he said had worked, because she walked to the edge of the stage and sat down. Her tiny feet crossed daintily at the ankles as her legs hung over the foot of the stage. She still had not uttered a word, yet he was enthralled by her. "Who are you? You danced like an angel!" The deep resonance of his laugh reverberated around the hall as he teased her. "Is that why you can't speak? Are you a gift from the Gods? I know you have a voice. I heard the beautiful notes of your song leave your lips not less than a minute ago."
He placed his hands on the foot of the stage and propelled himself up and turned, sitting next to this silent vision. Her eyes looked so frightened, he reached out to turn her face towards him. His eyes met hers in friendship, "I don't bite you know. I'm not usually so awkward with women. Most actually find me quite amusing, sometimes even charming. There's nothing to be afra-- " Jax halted his speech as a strange feeling swept through him. His eyes studied her face, his confusion grew with each passing second. Jax closed his eyes and reached out with both hands and gently felt the features of her face. His heart began to race as the knowledge of who he held in his hands again, filled his mind. He pulled her towards him in a warm embrace, placing his lips near her ear. She heard him speak the name in a shuddered sigh, "Nancy, I thought I'd lost you forever? I searched for you endlessly for months, until I finally lost hope." He pulled away and looked beseechingly at her, "At one point I thought you had been a dream, a delusion, a mirage. I can't believe I found you here of all places! Have you been here all this time? Maboui said you had left for New York!"
Brenda looked at Jax in wonder, "How did you know it was me?"
"How does a newborn baby recognize its mother? It just knows. And once you've been lucky enough to hold perfection, you don't forget the touch, the taste, the scent, or a single second of how it felt!"
Brenda began to cry as the guilt, nerves and excitement renders her helpless.
"Nancy, it's all right. The last year was absolutely horrid, but we're finally together again. That's all that matters now! Thomas told me you had left me a letter, but I never read it! It was somehow lost. I hope you haven't hated me for the time we've been apart. Please say you don't hate me Nancy! Tell me what it said now! I want to hear every single perfect word you wrote to me. I'll even close my eyes, I want to hear the message as you intended it to be received." He closed his eyes to emphasized his point but open one eye in an exaggerated peek.
Brenda couldn't help but laugh at his antics! "Jax, I've missed you so! I was devastated when you never called. I thought that once you regained your eyesight, you decided not to get involved with someone so young. You never seemed to lack for company of the female persuasion this past year. Not that I scanned the papers for news of you, or anything."
Jax couldn't resist placing a kiss on each blushing cheek. As he pulled back to let her continue her explanation, his eyes focused on her lips. They trembled slightly as her tongue moisten her dry lips. He uttered an oath and lowered his head to assist her in the task. From the first moment their lips touched, electricity swept through his body as they melded together as one. His tongue gently ticked the outer edges of her lips, begging to be invited in. She soon complied, opening her mouth to his as he deepened the kiss. As the kisses grew more passionate, Brenda climbed on top of his lap, and they perilously balanced on the edge of the stage. Jax leaned back onto the stage taking Brenda down on top of, as the last vestige of rational thought left his mind. Brenda last doubt of Jax's interest in her vanished, as it was apparent that she had driven him into a frenzy. His moans echo across the hall as her tongue gently traced the outer edges of his ear, then gently blew to dry what she had dampened.
Jax tried to back away from the edge of the stage so he would gain enough leverage to stand and take Nancy to an infinitely more private place. He did not want their first time to be on a bare stage. He wanted her to look back on this moment always with fond memories. First times should be about comfort, pleasure, music, flowers, champagne, and romance. As he finally was able to get his feet under him, he rose with Nancy still in his arms her arms wrapped around his neck. He gently lowered her to the ground causing her body to slide closely down his. She looked into his eyes with a knowing smile as she could feel how badly he needed her. She responded by pressing herself even closer to him, her hands moving down his chest causing his breath to catch in his throat. She leaned in and pressed her opened mouth against his chest. He felt her hot breath penetrate through his shirt, sending him to edge of losing all sense of caring where they were. A growl from deep in his chest rumbled forth as he dragged her face back towards his and their lips met in a explosion of passion.
They were lost in a desire so hot that neither heard a woman entering from stage right. "Danny, Miguel, we're going to set up here. As soon as we're done plugging in, we'll perform a sound check, then run through the songs on tomorrow's play list. Get the guys to unload the van and I'll wait for you here." After dispensing her instructions she turned towards the stage and saw the performance that was currently being played out at center stage! "Oh! I'm so sorry! I didn't know that anyone would be here. I was told to set up the equipment and rehearse the band for tomorrow night." As the couple separately quickly and tried to straighten themselves, Lois recognized them both. She slaps him on the back, smiling broadly at Brenda, "Jasper Jacks! I've read about you in all the financial pages! So you and Brenda have a new merger in the works I see! Sorry to interrupt your business meeting. So what's going on between the two of you? Does this mean I should call my broker and buy some stock in Barrett Industries, before the news hits the press? I could use some quick capital gains to invest back into my music company! Since Brenda seems to be at a lost for words, let me introduce myself. I'm Lois Cerullo, manager of tomorrow's band, The Idle Rich. And owner of the new music label, L & S Records."
Jax turned towards Brenda, "Barrett Industries! You're Brenda Barrett? Are you the reason why Julia beat out my bid by hours? Have you been working against me from the beginning?" Brenda visibly cringed at the accusatory tone in his voice. She was shocked into silence at the sudden turn of events that had spun her world out of her control. There's was nothing she could do to stop what was happening. Lois was watching in growing confusion.
"All right, it's obvious that I've entered in the middle of the movie. What's going on here? How can you two not know each other? You looked like you knew each other quite well when I walked in on you. Have I said something I shouldn't have?"
Jax was the first to respond, "No Lois, you've only told me something that I should have known from the beginning." The look he fires at Brenda, is hot with controlled anger. "If you'll excuse me ladies, I have some business to attend to, after I take a cold shower." He leaves without another word, while Brenda watches the best thing she never had, walk out the door and out of her life. She crumples on the stage and begins to cry. Lois drops to her knees and wraps her arms around her, rocking gently back and forth. She knew that Brenda was hurting and needed comfort, and she was somehow responsible, but she had no idea what was going on.
"Bren, what's going on? I'm sorry about causing you any pain, but I don't know what I've done. Is there anything I can do to fix this?"
"You can't fix, what was never whole to begin with. This is my mess and I'll have to deal with it. It's about time I take ownership for my own actions. There's nothing for you to apologize for Lo. I lied to Jax about who I was, and I was trying to find a way to tell him the truth. You just happened to tell him before I had a chance to, that's all."
"That's all! Me and my big mouth! I should cut out my tongue, so as not to cause anymore trouble. Why can't I learn to keep my mouth shut. Let me go talk to him. I'll fix everything in a Brooklyn minute. He'll be running back to you asking for your forgiveness by the time I'm done with him!"
Brenda drags Lois back down as she stands, planning to make good on her words, "Lois, I appreciate your offer, but this is something I have to explain to Jax. You just stay here and begin your rehearsals. I have some business of my own to take care of before I find Jax. Our conversation is long past due." Brenda rises with a resolute expression in her eyes. She smiles and exits the studio as Miguel and the Idle Rich roll in their equipment. They all turned in unison as the attractive dancer smiled as she passed them on her way out. Miguel looked like he was about to follow when Lois' voice cut through his thoughts.
"Just hold it right there Miguel. You don't want to get involved with that one anyway. I have a feeling that Brenda's a one man woman, and she already found that man."
Miguel smiled at Lois and shrugged, "I was only planning to say 'Hi', Lois. Just trying to be friendly to promote the group. You know that my heart belongs to Lily. I am not a, what do you call it, a 'Hound'? Like so many of your American men. Just because I look, does not mean I will act!"
"I know Miguel, but we need to invest all our energies into the next two days. We all need to focus on the Gala. Tomorrow could be the break we need to send this album we're cutting through the roof! Now let's get to work my stars!"

~ Lobby - Nukuyaweni Outpost - 2:00 P.M. ~
"I don't want to argue about this anymore Ned! I'm ending this discussion now!" Julia walked into the lobby and looked around. This place was more fabulous in person than it did in Brenda's pictures.
Ned followed her into the lobby. He was steaming, "Where do you get off ending the discussion? This is a partnership Julia. When did this become a oligarchy?"
"Since you lost all business sense. I have to take charge if you persist on being so short sighted."
"You don't have any idea what you're talking about. The Port Charles Hotel is a success all due to my hard work and planning!"
"Ha! If I didn't' feel such pity for you and your demented mind, I would laugh in your face. The PC Hotel was all my idea. Every change made was my idea. What is it about men? why can't they deal with a woman who has brains and beauty without feeling threatened?"
"When you're done patting yourself on the back Julia, come visit me in my room and we'll continue our business discussion. You can't take action on your plans without my approval. We're equal partner's Julia. If I don't say yes, nothing will happen!"
"We'll see about that Ashton!"
They both reached the desk at the same time, speaking in unison, "My room keys now!"
Maboui was trying to decide how to check both in at the same time as Brenda approached. "Julia, Ned! What are you two arguing about now? You can't agree on anything lately." Maboui felt a sinking feeling in his stomach as he realized these were the new owners. What hope did this place have of surviving with the two partners openly warring before the first guests arrived?
Julia ignored Brenda and turned to the clerk, "Julia Barrett, your new owner. I'd like to check in now. I would like to change my reservation to a single. I will not be sharing my room with Mr. Ashton. Please find him other accommodations."
"Not so fast Blondie, the room was reserved under my name, so it's my room." Ned now turned towards Maboui, "MY room key please" He snatched the key and departed leaving an opened mouth Julia behind. "You can place Ms. Barrett in the lobby for all I care."
Brenda could not stand anymore and stepped in, "Maboui, please give me an extra key to my bure please. My sister will be staying with me for now. Julia, make yourself comfortable there. Why don't you take a shower or a soak in the spa and calm down? I'll be there in a few minutes. I want to speak with Ned. We've got an opening to plan and we can't have your lover's spat or anyone else's little personal problems affect tomorrow's Gala. We have a lot of money invested in this Julia, control your emotions. Maboui, give me a key to Ned's room too, just in case he's uncooperative about opening his door. Julia GO!" She handed Julia's luggage to the baggage man and watched as a stunned Julia followed him out of the lobby. He handed her Ned's key without an argument. As she departed down the adjacent hall, Maboui sighed in relief. These American owners were quite emotional. He hoped Brenda could get them to come to an understanding, otherwise tomorrow night's fireworks were going to be exploding in more than just the sky above Ngau!

Ned's Room - Nukuyaweni Outpost ~
"Ned, open this door now! It's Brenda." She had inserted her key in the lock when the door was flung open. Losing her balance she fell at his feet.
Not concern that she was sprawled across the floor, he spoke calmly, "What do you want Bren? I'm unpacking."
Brenda glanced about the room and noticed his bag tossed in the corner, and a half empty glass on the coffee table. "Looks more like you're tying one on to me. Don't pull an AJ Ned, you're better than that. What caused that scene between the two of you out there? Do you think that was appropriate in front of the staff? If you and Julia can't separate business from pleasure, maybe it's time for you to part."
"Don't bother with the lecture Brenda. I'm too old and too tired for it to work." He downs the balance of the scotch, swallowing back the fumes that begin to rise back up his throat making his eyes water.
Brenda sits net to him, "What is sitting alone in your room drinking going to resolve Ned? You taught me to fight for what you want. Those who can't, teach. Is that what you are?
"Brenda, Stop! Don't even try to cross swords with the master. Has the thought crossed your mind that I'm not fighting because maybe I've discovered she's not what I want?" As he saw the old hurt look flash across her face, he leaned forward and touched her knee. "I'm sorry Bren, it just won't work. We're too much alike. Neither of us is willing to back down. All we do is butt heads lately. I don't want to fight 24 hours a day. This is our last deal together. That's what we're fighting about now. She wants us to buy out the 'S' in 'L & S Records'. She's got it in her mind that this group playing the Gala is going to be big and she wants a piece of them. I'm not about to leap head first into the music industry. I know nothing about the business which is twice as much a Julia knows. Beyond singing in a High School and College band, I have no expertise. First rule of business Brenda, don't invest your money in something you know little about. Don't let emotions get in the way of good business practices."
Brenda nudged him on the shoulder laughing, "Ned! You had your own rock band! You have a wild and crazy side I've never seen? Why did you stop?"
"Because grandfather said it wasn't appropriate for a Quartermaine to been seen screeching about on stage. He threaten or bribed every club owner in the state not to hire us. I left the band so they could make a living. I didn't want them to starve because of me."
Ned sighs and Brenda can see the wistful look in his eyes. He really missed performing! Who would have thought that with all the advantages he grew up with, that he too had regrets about what he could never be.
Ned embraced her in a hug, "That's enough of my sordid past Bren. Let me change, and you can help me raise the white flag to Julia. I'm sure we can make it through this weekend before we end this amicably." Seeing her pensive look he muses her hair, "Don't be so sad Brenda, I'm only breaking up with her, not you. Where else am I going to find a baby sister who adores me like a God! Hey! Don't get fresh with me!" He jumped away as Brenda pinches him hard.
"What can I say Ned. I couldn't resist your dimples a second longer! Now get a move on! We three have a lot to do before tomorrow night."

~ Jax's Room - Nukuyaweni Outpost ~
The door was ajar when Thomas approached. He entered when no one responded to his knock. The room was deserted! Thomas turned to leave as he heard the faint sounds of ice clinking against a glass. He followed the sound out to the verandah.
"Jax! What is wrong? You left an urgent message at the desk for me, and you do not answer your door or my voice. I find you sitting here all alone in silence." Jax doesn't appear to even notice Thomas. Panic begins to rise and thoughts too horrible to be true enters his mind, "Oh my God, has something happened to your Mum, Dad, or Jerry?! Jax what is wrong? Why are you off in a world I cannot reach? Is it Miranda? Has she done something to herself in the sanitarium? Thomas takes Jax by the shoulder and begins to shake him vigorously. "Jax! It's Thomas! Come out of it now or I will have to call the doctor!"
Jax eyes move slowly towards Thomas. He had never seen eyes so removed from emotion, so devoid of feeling. He looked into two empty orbs of blue and knew what was wrong with his friend. "You know about Brenda, don't you Jax?"
At once Jax came to life, "Thomas! Not you too? How many people that I hold dear, have lied to me? All of you! I had come to terms with my family Thomas, but now you? Why? Why would you help her in betraying me. You of all people knew how I had felt about her."
"I did not betray you Jax. I thought she was who she said she was last year. I was without knowledge of her dual identity. She just told me yesterday Jax. She was full of remorse. She planned to tell you today. She would have told you months ago, except for the lost letter. Jax, how did she tell you of her true identity? How could she be so clumsy in the telling, that you would react with such violent anger? She was so repentant. Have you no forgiveness left in your heart? If you look with your heart instead of your mind, you would see the truth in her eyes. I can see how she loves you. Why can you not see the same? Has life treated you so ashamedly that you can not see how she could have been backed into a corner between family and love? How many times have you forsaken what you truly desired, for family? Did that make you love what you had given up any less? How can you hate someone who is a reflection of yourself. We became brothers because we were of the same mind and heart. How can we have drifted so far apart in the basic feelings and perceptions of others? Maybe what you should be mourning is not the lost of love, but the lost of yourself. You've lost your vision of life's goal Jax. Do not deny the love that comes your way because you do not agree with the path it takes. Love is rare and to dismiss it so quickly will be a loss you will regret forever. Life is already a challenge to body, spirit and mind, without dragging around a heavy heart as an added handicap. Maybe you should ask yourself, What is worst? Forgiving this person and moving forward with a new understanding, or walking away knowing that you have forever left behind the piece that would complete the puzzle of your heart? Only then Jax should you walk away."
Jax looked grimly out to the bay, not responding to anything Thomas had said.
"Have you ignored everything I have spoken Jax? Am I really speaking to deaf ears? Do not become what you revile Jax. We both hate those with closed minds and hearts?!"
Jax emptied what remained in his glass and turned towards Thomas, "I heard you Thomas, but I haven't made up my mind. It's all a jumble right now. I haven't had time to unscramble my own thoughts. I can't even begin to think of what Nan-Brenda's true motives were." He stands and stretches, "You know what? I'm going to take a swim. Maybe that will clear my mind. I just need some time alone right now to collect my thoughts. To decide which fork to take in this crossroads. I've heard everything you said. I just need to decide what is best for me right now."
Thomas clasped Jax towards him in brotherhood. "That is all I ask my friend. I will leave you to your thoughts. I have much to do to prepare for tomorrow. I will see you at the Gala. But Jax, if you need me, leave word with Maboui. He will find a way to reach me and I will be by your side as soon as I can get away. Decide what is best for you Jax. I'll will not voice another opinion. I will stand by whatever you decide is right."
Jax laughed, "That would be a miracle Thomas! Since when have you not reasoned with be beyond all limits to stop me from making the wrong choices in life. You are my spiritual brother Thomas and I love you for that!"

~ Dance Studio - Nukuyaweni Outpost - 4:00 P.M. ~
"That's perfect Miguel, the arrangement change made a huge difference! We are going to knock this crowd on their artistic asses tomorrow! By next week, the Idle Rich are going to be a household name. We're going to springboard into the stratosphere guys. As my pops would say, we're going to knock this one outta the park!"
They all turned as a loud slow clapping sound came from the rear of the auditorium. A small dark haired man in a brightly colored well cut sports jacket approached.
"What are you doing here Sonny? You're suppose to be my 'Silent' partner.
"Just checking out my investment Lois. Making sure you do Bensonhurst proud."
"Sonny we agreed that music was my expertise and you would not get involved. So why don't you tell my what you're here?"
Sonny pats down his already slicked back hair before he speaks, "Well Lois, it seems that OUR business, and MY business have overlapped. The man I work for has interest in your lead singer here. I've been instructed to watch his progress closely."
"Miguel? How would Miguel know anyone you would work for? Lois looks over to Miguel who is trying hard not to attack Sonny with his fists.
"Well Lois, it's like this, last year Miguel made nice with Rivera's daughter Lily. Rivera did not kill him for this because he fled Puerto Rico and laid low. But NOW, lover boy here is about to become a major recording star. Rivera has asked me to come here and remind Miguel that he has not run so far, that Rivera's hand can not reach out and squash the bug that Miguel still is. Do you get my drift Miguel?"
"I'm am not stupid like you Sonny. Nothing you could say could ever rise above my head. I get your warning clearly. But you can tell Rivera that when I get enough money, I will return for Lily and even his power will not stop us form joining together again!"
"Well if that's how you want it to be Pretty Boy. At least you will die with a smile on your face. But you have been warned. Whatever happens after this moment is of your own choosing."
"He can choose any path he wants to after tomorrow's concert! This group is going to be a huge success!" They all turned as Brenda and Ned entered from the back of the hall. Sonny's eyes focused on the girl walking next to the dimpled man. She was a knock out! What was she doing with that dull clown?
"Sorry to interrupt rehearsals Lois, but I wanted to introduce you to Ned Ashton. He's part owner in this Barrett Industries venture." Brenda noticed Ned's heighten interest as they approached Lois.
"Hello Ms. Cerullo, Brenda's been telling me about how good your band is. I can't wait to hear them myself. My partner Julia mention you were seeking a new partnership group. I'm available now, if you want to sell yourself to me. Brenda's mouth dropped open in shock! Ned was adamant about staying out of the music business, and now it's his idea to buy out Lois' silent partner?!
"Excuse me but I'm Lois' silent partner. She can't sell what I don't want to sell."
"Sonny, you told me you were clean, but it's obvious that you're not. I don't need any trouble with the Feds, I need you to sell your half of the group to someone else."
"Lois, your wrong. The money I invested in L & S was all clean money. I can prove it all if they ask to open the books. You will be taking no risks. This is a legitimate investment for me."
"But you're not legitimate Sonny. Now you're even threatening my talent. I can't have that. You have to sell."
Brenda watched the whole interplay between the two in utter horror. Sonny! That's the name that has haunted her dreams for the past year. She peered at him from behind Ned. He appeared harmless enough. He seemed to be polite but arrogant. The same could be said for Ned. However Ned's demeanor was more cultured, this man grew up on the streets. He looked dangerous, brimming with bravado and steam. As she shivered, Ned turned toward her, "Brenda, are you all right?"
She smiled weakly "I'm fine Ned, someone just walked over my grave is all."
Sonny directed his most winning smile at her, "So is that your wife Ashton? She's quite a prize. I'd protect her if I were you?"
Offended, Brenda snapped, "I'm no man's prize Mr. Corinthos. Just where do you get off talking about me as if I wasn't' here? I don't know what women you're use to dealing with, but if you want to know anything about me, speak to me yourself!"
Sonny found that as anger filled her eyes, she became even more appealing. He reached for her hand and placed a soft kiss on her wrist. "I'm sorry Bren.....da, I did not intend to insult you. But in my neighborhood, you don't approach a lovely lady without asking permission of her man first. I'm not use to hanging out with you, blessed at birth types." Brenda bit back a withering retort. What was the use? Any insult would roll off his back. She removed her hand from his grasp and placed her arm around Ned.
Lois watched everything happening before her with great interest. She felt her heart sink when Brenda's arm went around Ned and the looks the two exchanged. She had hoped Ned was available. He was so cute! Those dimples were deep enough to drown in. The way he had asked her to meet with him about her company had made her feel he was interested in more that business. But after seeing him close ranks around Brenda as Sonny made his pass, had convinced her that there was something going on between the two. Oh Well, can't miss what you never had. Besides, it was bad to mix business with pleasure, unless it was Monkey Business. But she didn't think Ned was the Monkey Business type. Too bad! She imagined that he would look hot, in black leather pants!
"We have business to discuss with Lois, Mr. Corinthos. If you'll excuse us." Brenda plainly stated, attempting to make him leave.
"If it involves L & S, I need to be included. I'm the 'S' in L & S."
Miguel interrupted "And that stands for .. .. .. Short? .. .. .. Silly? .. .. .. Stupid?"
Sonny grabs Miguel around the neck and began to squeeze hard. "It stands for "Scary.. .. ..Strong .. .. .. Supreme, Pretty Boy!"
Ned, Lois and Brenda jump him making him release Miguel, who fell to the ground gasping for air. Brenda screamed to Thomas who arrived just as Ned and the band had pushed Sonny up against the wall and were using some loose speaker wire to bind his hands behind him. "Thomas, get the authorities here now. This man just tried to kill Miguel." As Thomas ran to the phone, Brenda came up close behind Sonny. As angry as he was his heart raced with excitement as he felt her breathe tickle his ear as she spoke. "That was a big mistake, Mr. Corinthos! I thought you mob boys always got stupid henchmen to do their dirty work. To attack Miguel in front of so many witnesses was stupid. It's sad what happens to Americans who break laws in foreign lands. Expensive lawyers can't create miracles that they do back home. You do the crime here, you do the time Sonny Boy."
Sonny turns his head so he can see Brenda's beautiful face. "Hey Brenda, why don't you come over and whisper in my other ear. It's feeling jealous that the other one has gotten all your attention."
Ned shuts him up with a quick punch. "You don't talk to Brenda that way ever again Corinthos. Ah! The police have arrived! Well, enjoy your trip down the river Sonny."
Lois was on her knees talking to Miguel as they all turned their attention away from Sonny being taken away. "Miguel? Are you all right? Oh my God! Can you breath? Call for a doctor! Something's wrong with Miguel!"
Brenda and Ned lean down to help. He appeared to be breathing on his own, but his voice was just a whispered gurgle. Lois was in full panic mode, "Miguel, can you speak? Take your time. You can breath OK right?" She sighed in relief as he nodded yes. "OK, so this is just temporary. The doctor is going to give you something and you'll be just like new tomorrow night! So we have absolutely nothing to worry about!" Lois' tone was upbeat and positive but Brenda saw the worried furrow knotted in the center of her brow. This would be a catastrophe if Miguel couldn't sing tomorrow. Without Miguel, the Idle Rich would be an instrumental band. Lois was beginning to hyperventilate as the med techs arrived.
"Ned, why don't you and Lois do a quick run through with the band. I'll go to the hospital with Miguel. We can't wait to see if he's going to be all right tomorrow. You better get ready to front the band tomorrow just in case."
"What! Are you crazy? Ned Ashton can't be caught singing with a rock band!"
"What else are we going to do Ned? If Miguel can't sing, how are we going to get a replacement band here in time for the Gala? Besides half the party is to introduce this new band! They have to go on. You we're just telling me that leaving your band was your greatest regret, so here's your chance to live your fantasy!"
"This is not my fantasy Brenda, what you're asking me to do is a nightmare! I can't go on unprepared!"
"That's why I'm telling you to rehearse with Lois now! Get to know each other! You said you were interested in investing. What better way to research the product! Besides, Sonny may be interested in selling now. He might be very open to a deal being made for some kind testimony on his behalf. But it's only a thought! I've got to go with Miguel. I'll be back to let you know his status."
As she left she saw Lois and Ned put their heads together with the band. She smiled at the cute picture they made. She loved Julia, but Ned wasn't right for her. Wouldn't it be funny if something were to happen from this horrible incident?

~ Gala - Nukuyaweni Outpost - July 4th - 9:00 P.M. ~
"Stop fidgeting, you look just fine. No one is going to laugh at you Ned. You were really good during rehearsals, this is going to be great!"
"That's easy for you to say, it's not you up there putting your good name on the line."
"If that's what you're worried about, why don't you change your name? Be someone else for tonight. I did it last year, it can be lots of fun!"
"And where has pretending to be someone else gotten you this year, Brenda."
"That was really mean Ned. You know how much the whole Jax thing is bothering me right now."
"I'm sorry Brenda, but I'm not comfortable right now. When I'm off balance, I have to strike out to equal the playing field."
Julia walked up laughing, "Take it from me Brenda, he's telling you the truth. He can't stop himself, he has to get the upper hand at all times, don't you Ned?" She leans over and gives him a quick friendly kiss on the cheek.
"Do you have to be so happy about our breakup? I expected at least some period of mourning from you Julia."
"What can I say lover, when you're right, you're right."
Lois runs up in a frenzy. "So are you ready Ned? Don't worry you're going to be fabulous. You're almost as good as Miguel."
"Almost as good? Who are you kidding? I'm better than Miguel!"
"You can believe whatever you want to tonight Ned, as long as you get out on that stage and sing as well as you did in rehearsals. How do you want me to announce you by the way?"
"Why don't you introduce me as, Eddie Maine."
"Why Eddie Maine?"
"Eddie was my dog when I was a child. He was given away after he bit my mother Tracy." Ned shakes his head, "I loved that dog, I hope biting mom didn't make him ill. Maine is the state where I performed my last gig. I've decided that I don't want to go on as myself. It will be easier to perform in this get up you've put me in if I pretend to be someone else."
"Whatever works for you is fine with me. OK Ned, are you ready for me to make you a star?"
"I think I'm ready to throw up. I'm feeling kind of sick. You better announce me before I lose my nerve."
Lois runs out on stage and welcomes all the guests. She thanks Barrett Industries for the opportunity and introduces Julia to the crowd. Julia gives her speech to the guests talking about all the changes that had been made and her hopes for the project.
In the back of the auditorium, two men watched the festivities. Both were watching with great interest but for entirely different reasons. Jax had his eyes trained on stage left, where Brenda was standing there waiting for her cue to bring on the band. She was dazzling in a tight fitting red silk halter top floor length dress. She had turned once to speak to someone in the wings and his eyes had been riveted to the small of her back as the neckline ended just a fraction of an inch above indecent. He had been unable to concentrate on anything other than Brenda for the last day. He was still confused as the emotions of anger, confusion, desire, delight, distrust raced through his mind.
"Hey Jax, who's the blonde lovely up there? I'd like me a piece of that pretty bit of fluffy confection."
Jax looked at where Jerry's attention was directed. That's Julia Barrett Jer. Didn't you hear Lois' introduction? She the one who outbid me on this place with the assistance of her sister Brenda."
"Brenda! You mean your little Mata Hari. She's the Nancy that you were looking for last year right Jax? She's the one that had you all weepy. Turned out to be spying on family business, right Jax?"
"I don't know for sure Jer. We haven't discussed it yet. I walked out in a fury when her deception was uncovered. I'm going to talk to her later tonight."
"Jax, haven't you learned anything yet? You can't get involved with her. She will always look out for family business before you. She's proven that already. Where is she Jax? I haven't gotten a look at her yet."
His eyes followed in the direction that Jax pointed. "Doesn't look much like her sister, but she's lovely in her own way I guess."
"Jerry are you blind? Every man in this room is looking at her! Look at them all drooling. It's disgusting!"
"Jax, I think that some of that is in your mind. She's attractive, but so are many women here tonight. No one is drooling over her, but you. She's already got a ring through your nose Jax, you're a gonner."
Jax lightly punched Jerry in the shoulder as they turned their attentions back to the stage. Julia had finished her opening comments and was about to introduce the band. She made a surprise announcement that the group they had chosen to perform here, was now also under the Barrett Industries umbrella. She also announced that the lead singer of the group had an unfortunate accident and would not be able to perform. However, a singer of equal talent had been acquired to fill in for Miguel tonight. And without further adieu she introduced "Eddie Maine, and the Idle Rich"!
Jerry leaned in towards Jax, "Hey, isn't that Ned Ashton up there?"
Jax was laughing for the first time in over a day, "Yes it is! Look at those leather pants he's wearing! They look like they spray painted them on. Julia wasn't kidding about him filling in for Miguel. He's about ready to bust out of those breeches!"
"You know he's not half bad. Do you think we could get him to perform at mum and dad's anniversary?"
The Jacks boys roared with laughter. But the guests were enjoying the show. The dance floor was filled and everyone was having a joyous time. Except for Jax, he wandered aimless around the floor. He ignored every woman's request for a dance. Brenda was no better, she had been behind stage the whole party, coordinating all that was happening back stage. Why had she bothered to wear that sexy dress if she wasn't planning to show it off?
The band had been a phenomenal success and Ned was taking a bow before ending their first set. "I know you came here expecting Miguel tonight, and want to thank you for extending your kindness in allowing me to perform in his place. Miguel is improving rapidly and you won't be disappointed when you see the number one guy return to his rightful spot, fronting this fantastic band next week. The Idle Rich has agreed to perform here on weekends for the next month as part of their agreement with the new "L & B Records" label. That's L for Lois Cerullo, come out and take a bow Lois." Lois came out briefly, bowed and exited. When he pulled Brenda from behind the stage curtain, she turned almost the same shade as her dress. Jax looked about the room counting all the men who were eyeing with lust. He could take them all on, if he had to. They better not try anything with her, including Ashton! "And now for the B, this is Brenda Barrett ladies and gentlemen, the new co-owner of L & B Records! The deal was just inked today! Take a bow Brenda!" Brenda curtsied sexily and was making her way off stage when Eddie stopped her. "Not so fast Brenda I'm going to need a little help ending the first set. I want to end it with something slow and romantic, which means a duet. Can you all help by encouraging her?" As the applause rained down upon them, Ned whispered into Brenda's ear. "I told you I get you back for this Bren!" Then he turned back to the crowd, "After this last song we're going to shoot off the fireworks to celebrate the 4th of July and the opening of the New Nukuyaweni Outpost and then we'll be back to take you all into the 5th!" The applause, cheers and whistles faded into silence as the band begins to play,
To the audience Ned appeared to be looking directly into Brenda's eyes as he began the song. But he was really looking over her shoulder, at Lois.
Do I love you because you're beautiful?
Or are you beautiful
Because I love you?
Am I making believe I see in you
A girl to lovely to
Be really true?
Do I want you because you're wonderful?
Or are you wonderful
Because I want you?
Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream,
Or are you really as beautiful as you seem?
The guests had settled down to a silent hush. They were entranced by the love flowing from the couple on the stage above them. They radiated love, it seeped from their pores. Brenda was looking at Ned with a passion that was glowing from within. She begins to sing with a sweetness that envelopes the crowd with memories of how precious new love feels....
Maybe you're imagining me.
And maybe I'm imagining you too.
Am I making believe I see in you
A man to perfect to
Be really true?
Do I want you because you're wonderful,
Or are you wonderful
Because I want you?
Ned and Brenda were standing so close, and then they touched! They joined hands and looked deeply into each other's eyes as they sang together.
Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream?
Or are you really as wonderful as you seem?
Ned goes down on one knee and speaks,
I've always dreamed it would happen like this
And now it really has! I don't ever want this night to end.
Brenda sits on Ned's knee and speaks,
Neither do I .. .. .. !
Brenda wraps her arms behind Ned's neck winding her fingers through his hair as they again sing .. . ..
Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream?
Or are you really as wonderful as you seem?
As the final notes of their song faded into silence they gently kissed. Brenda was mortified as the silence lingered, then the applause exploded around them. Lois was looking at Ned with stardust in her eyes as Ned's met hers off stage. Jax whispers a curse and stormed outside. Jerry who had somehow made his way to Julia and had been dancing with her during the duet, was leading her out towards the bluff.
Ned stood and turned Brenda into two spins before she bowed. While bowing Brenda forced her mind into the present. She had been so frighten that she had sent her mind off into her own fantasy. She had sung that song only for Jax. She looked up and scanned the crowd for him, but found that he was not anywhere in the audience. As she stood, Ned spun her twice again into another bow. She was now trying hard not to cry. She had sung her heart out to Jax, hoping he would hear and understand, and he had not even been there. Ned finally let her go and she ran off the stage to the welcoming solitude. As she composed herself, she heard Ned speaking to the crowd. "Just stay right here everyone while we open the roof and let the real fireworks begin."
Brenda went out the backstage exit to get some fresh air. She breathed deeply as the cool summer air as she slowly felt the embarrassed heat leave her body. She walked towards the tram, needing to get away from the crowd. The view was picturesque from the tram as it descended from the clouds down to the shore. She could see the moonlight reflecting a silver strip of light across the Bay of Angels. The rainbow of lights were cascading across the falls bathing the beach in a warm glow. A ribbon of fog was slowing rolling in towards the mist at the base of the falls, where Brenda saw someone standing there alone, staring up. As the tram opened she traveled quickly to the falls and she saw him. He had moved to the edge of the shore and was looking out into the bay.
"Jax?" she whispered. He turned and pinned her with those hard angry eyes.
"Haven't you won enough conquests tonight? Why are you here? Following me so you can say you have stolen ALL men's hearts tonight?" She could feel anger in the way his words whipped out impatiently.
"I don't understand Jax? I've been working backstage all night. I haven't had one dance. What do you mean conquests? I sang a song for you tonight, but you weren't there."
Jax struggled for control in his slow, even intake of breath. He wanted to reach out and touch her. In frustration, he jammed his hands into his pockets to prevent them from acting on their own. She was so lovely tonight, he couldn't think straight. The moon was making her skin glow as if dusted in effervescent powder. He wanted her so much every muscle in his body screamed for release. Her eyes were driving him insane. They held a trace of hurt and loneliness that made every man in the room want to comfort her tonight. It took every ounce of self control he had, not to jumped onto that stage and throttle Ned Ashton for laying his hands all over her. Brenda was no better, she mooned over him, drooled over him, sang to him as if he were her perfect match. He hated Ashton more than he'd hated any man in his life.
"Jax? Why won't you talk to me? Let me explain what happened last year, what happened yesterday. I was going to tell you, but one thing led to another, and then Lois came in. Everything just exploded in my face before I had a chance to tell you, my way."
"Your way? The way of lies and deceit?" The only way Jax could prevent himself from surrendering to her, was to keep his anger raging. He wanted to stop, he wanted to forgive, but something was possessing him. For a moment they stood there staring stubbornly at each other, then the sky exploded with color above them. The fireworks display had started. The display diverted their attention momentarily as they shared the experience of seeing the skyrockets brighten the sky with burning light.
Brenda lost her balance as her heel sunk into a soft patch in the sand. Jax caught her by the arm to prevent her from falling. In taking that action, Jax had let his guard down. The anger fell like a heavy curtain, as he was consumed by a heat so hot he thought he would implode from its searing power. Out on the water, all the colors of the exploding sky were reflecting back on the cresting waves. Brenda saw in Jax's eyes the waves of emotions that were sinking his resolve to push her away. She saw the opportunity to tell him what had happened.
An hour later as she finished her explanation, Jax handed her his kerchief to dab away the tears. He understood how she could have been trapped in her web of deceit, but he wasn't sure he could entirely trust her. He knew that he didn't distrust her enough to walk away, so they had decided to start over again as friends. He looked up and saw the lights from the dance sending bits of light into the night sky. The party had continued with the roof open and the soft sounds of music could be heard on the beach. Jax stood, extending a hand to Brenda helping her up. As their hands touched and she slowly stood, his eyes were transfixed on her face. He caught his breath as her lovely face drew closer to his. She was so tempting, so bewitching, so delicate. He reached forward tentatively and placed his hand along her cheek, his thumb softly caressed her lower lip. He whispered .. .. ..
Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream?
Or are you really as wonderful as you seem?
Brenda seemed taken aback by his question as he saw her eyes widen in surprise. Her eyes searched his face for any trace of teasing or lightheartedness. All she saw was heat, passion, fire.
She was nearly breathless when she asked, "Jax, you said we were to start again as friends."
"Did I? I guess what I'm feeling is wrong then?" His eyes searched her face seeing hope, fear, trust, love? She was a temptress tonight. It would only take one gesture from her to send him over the edge. She reached up to him and placed her hands behind his head and drew his face closer to hers as she softly sung.. .. ..
Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream?
Or are you really as beautiful as you seem?
And in that moment, he was lost .. .. .. He swept her up into his arms, no longer caring about taking it slow, growing to trust, letting his feelings deepen. He had sunk into a vortex of feeling so out of control, he had to step away. He was on the raw edge between reason, and taking her on the beach under their neon rainbow by the falls. He inhaled deeply to strengthen his resolve and returned his gaze to hers, "I'm afraid to let you in more than I already have."
She reached up and tilted his face down towards hers, "Jax, I understand. As long as we're still friends and I have a chance to teach you to care for me, that 's all I want right now. I don't have to have it all, just a little piece of you is better than a whole, from anyone else."
He placed his hand on her cheek once more as her hands lowered to rest on his chest. He could feel her hands as they moved slowly up and down making him shiver with uncontrollable desire. He could see in her eyes all the innocence of youth. She had no idea what her touch was doing to him. The skin of her cheek was soft, so soft and smooth. He wondered how soft the skin on other regions of her body felt. He regretted his random thought as his body again tightened with incredible need. He was afraid of losing all sense of propriety, as his mind again raged with thoughts of undressing Brenda right there, and making love to her while the waves washed over their skin.
While his mind fought a valiant battle with his body, Brenda was battling her own emotions. She wanted him so badly it hurt inside. She was filled with a dull ache that she knew that only Jax could soothe. She knew he wanted to be friends and she had agreed, but couldn't lovers be just friends? She snaked her hands back up and around his neck pulling his lips within her reach. She placed her lips close to his, but didn't touch them. So close she could feel the heat, taste his breath, feel them tremble. And from that distance she again softly sang .. .. ..
Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream?
Or are you really as wonderful as you seem?
Jax was not a man of steel, he could take no more. He leaned down a fraction, to close the distance between their lips, and released all his pent up passion in a kiss that was more explosive than all the fireworks they had watched that night. His ears rang with the beating of his heart as they slowly sank together in the soft damp sand. He reached behind her neck and released the clasp holding her wispy dress together. She moaned softly as his lips ventured down to freshly uncovered skin .. .. ..
As the lovers explored and roamed and became reacquainted with each other's bodies they were unaware of a faint rustling in the jungle brush near the falls. Out of the darkness, a pair of coal black eyes were piercing though the night shadows watching the show play out before his angry eyes.
