About Seth Townsend Home

My shop in Marietta, GA

I started building furniture in my carport in 1997, first for my family, then for friends and neighbors. As my skills and reputation have grown, I've been able to add fine cabinetry to my line.

My goal is to offer superior, handcrafted, custom-made cabinets and furniture to those who seek it. I guarantee that goal because I put my name on it.

Woods

For all furniture and cabinets, I offer a variety of woods from which to choose. All are very durable hardwoods, with the exception of pine.

  • Red Oak: very popular in traditional kitchen cabinets
  • Quarter-sawn White Oak: used primarily in Mission style cabinets and furniture
  • Cherry: traditional with a rich warm appearance
  • Maple: the light blond appearance is great for traditional or contemporary styles
  • Birch: very similar to Maple, but less expensive
  • Mahogany: warm orange to dark brown tones and subtle, textured grain
  • Pine: frequently used for the rustic appearance of early American primitive furniture

Finishes

For all furniture and cabinets, I offer a variety of finishes from which to choose.

  • Shellac: adds a warm tone to wood; used primarily in furniture finishes
  • Milk Paint: traditional early American finish that's more like a stain
  • Wax: adds luster and fine texture to furniture pieces
  • Polyurethane: a non-yellowing, tough, clear finish for cabinets and cabinet interiors
  • Varnish: a warm, tough finish for cabinets and furniture

Shaker End Table Back Next

Whether you use it as an end table in the family room or as a night stand in the bedroom, you'll love the details of this little table. It's a replica of one built in 1875 by the Shakers of Hancock, Massachusetts. The table legs and aprons are made in poplar and constructed with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The drawers feature dovetail joinery and a delicate thumbnail profile on the drawer fronts. The tabletop is mahogany and finished with orange shellac and wax. The case is finished with beige milk paint and wax.

Plantation Desk Back Next

Around the turn of the 19th century, master craftsmen were turning out elaborate fall-front secretaries and desks. Country furniture builders, on the other hand, developed a much simpler style, and these became known as plantation or cupboard desks. The plantation desk had a lift-top and was basically a cupboard on a frame. This desk was designed after one built around 1810. It's built in pine and finished with stain, red milk paint and wax.

Dimensions: 68" tall by 34" wide and 24" deep

Price (as shown): $495.00

To Order: This plantation desk is custom built in a variety of woods and finishes at your request. E-mail me for details and pricing.

Six Board Chest Back Next

The six-board chest is perhaps the oldest form of furniture, with the basic design dating back to the middle ages. The chests shown are typical of many built by the early settlers in New England. They're built with pine and finished with milk paint and wax. This chest makes an excellent toy box.

Dimensions: 20" tall by 30" wide and 15" deep.

Price (as shown): $195.00

To Order: This chest is custom built in a variety of woods and finishes at your request. E-mail me for details and pricing.

Before there were kitchen sinks, early Americans used "water benches." Typically the lower shelf held buckets of water, while the "well" held a basin and pitcher, along with soap and other items. This replica is built with pine and finished with bayberry green milk paint and wax.

Dimensions: 45" tall by 30" wide and 16" deep

Price (as shown): $265.00

To Order: This water bench is custom built in a variety of woods and finishes at your request. E-mail me for details and pricing.

The Shakers Back

The Shakers were a religious sect with celibate communities in several states. Very prominent from 1820 to 1870, the simple lines of Shaker furniture were an expression of their values. They used a variety of woods in their projects, but most notable is their use of milk paint on plain woods such as pine. In sum, Shaker furnishings have no ornamental moldings, slender turnings, turned wooden knobs, and plain feet.
