Thank you for your interest in the Basenji. Basenjis really do not bark - they scream, howl, yodel and growl. . . they just don't go "woof, woof"! They do shed, although not a great deal and have no real doggy odor (they smell like freshly popped corn).
They also don't come when they're called, do what they're told, or stay where they're put! We recommend child-proof latches on cupboards because they can open them and do - take things out and eat them. We also recommend a baby gate to keep them from the front door, because if they see an open door they take off. Since they don't come when they're called, and are attracted to moving cars, they almost always get killed. We keep them off of the kitchen counter and the dining room table - anywhere else is pretty much fair game. They are a bit like a cross between a Siamese cat and a monkey. (We say if you've always wanted a wild animal, and never quite had the courage - here's your chance!)
We hope this information will be of help to you in deciding if this is, indeed, the right breed for you and/or your family. Please feel free to contact us for referrals to other breeders. |
