Modern Seagrave Fire Engines

Page 10: Engines 1 and 8, Santa Clara, CA

In the 1970s, fire apparatus started to become much taller than ever before, to accomodate firefighters and tehir equipment in greater comfort. This posed a problem fitting these rigs under short doorways of older fire stations, and under low bridges of older roads. Manufacturers such as Seagrave found clever ways to redesign their cabs for a lower overall profile. Engine 1, in the heart of downtown Santa Clara, CA, uses one of these Seagrave pumpers with the "low-profile" cab. It was built in 1979. (Ed Hass photos)

Identical to Engine 1, and purchased at the same time, this low-profile Seagrave model WB24068 of Santa Clara Engine 8 sports Seagrave serial #J73826 and factory manufacturing date of January 17, 1979. (Ed Hass photos, January 20, 1992)
