Stone Waking

I dreamed I woke, between my legs
a stone, red, textured like my skin.
I knew it was my child.  I carried it
everywhere in my arms, and it was warm,
and gave off light.

I never fed or dressed it: full
in itself, it needed no completion.
At night it nested near my ribs
and as I slept it sang.

Round as it was, it was no egg--
though featureless, not blank.
It was heavy to carry, but when I woke
and woke again, arms aching,

my room was dark, and my throat closed
to think I would not bear that weight again.
