Professor Steven N.S. Cheung

S

teven N.S. Cheung (1935 -     ) is the first Distinguished Annual Arnold C. Harberger Lecturer and the quintessential Renaissance Man. Receiving his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1967, he taught at Chicago before becoming Professor of Economics at the university of Washington and Chair of Economics at University of Hong Kong. He was president of Western Economic Association in 1997.

In addition to research in contracts and neo-institutional economics, Cheung is a noted photographer, calligrapher, and essayist. An art enthusiast, he collects paintings, Chinese calligraphy, antique jade, soapstone, ink-stone and ancient relics.

In 1982 Cheung, one of the most famous Chinese Economists in the world, came back to Hong Kong and taught in the School of Economics and Finance, University of Hong Kong and last for over 15 years. He specialized in Price Theory and Property Rights.

In 1988 Cheung brought Milton Friedman, the man who presided at his wedding, to meet Secretary General Zhao Ziyang of China. It is a halcyon augury that, though officially singled out by Beijing in 1989 as the two individuals who inspired the Tiananmen incident, Friedman and Cheung were warmly received by another Secretary General, Jiang Zemin, in 1993.
