Corn Block

I finished up the barn blocks mid week and decided to start on the corn blocks. I found a corn block pattern online, but it was way too big, so I scaled it down on the graph paper. I think the hardest thing is finding the right "fabrics." I knew with the small little pieces that I wanted to stay away from too much plaid. I wanted to do 6 corn blocks as well. I found some fabrics that I liked and decided to make 1 to see how it turned out. By the end of the weekend I decided I didn't really like the colors.

I saw a pair of Grandpa's pants that Grandma had sewn nearly whole leg patches in. It was the perfect green for the corn, and the brown patch would make a good background. One of his shirts had a design that reminded me of popcorn, so I used that too. It took me nearly all afternoon to cut out the fabrics. There wasn't much brown, so I had to be really careful to cut exactly so I wouldn't run out for the 6 blocks.

I sewed together 3 of the rows for the corn tonight. Haven't attempted the last row yet with the really tiny pieces. I want to get the rest of the corn done so I can make sure the last row matches up right. I realized I cut the angle wrong on one of the brown pieces, so I had to dig out the rest of the brown patch from the seams to add to the side of that piece to make it long enough. Hopefully I don't mess anything else up as there is no more brown!

After church tonight I worked on sewing the first 4 rows together. I was happy everything lined up okay. I spend more time ripping out seams because I sewed it 1/8th inch to the left or right or whatever and have to adjust it so that it all lines up okay.

I got all 6 corn blocks done tonight. They turned out pretty well. I really like the colors of this block.
