Barn Blocks

I found a barn and some farm animals and some patterns that I liked, but it wasn't quite what I had in mind. I'm starting to realize that I'm not going to find what I want, so I'll just have to design it myself. I got out the graphing paper and drew a barn. Then I started to break it into rows and sections so I could quilt it.

I made a full size paper template from the graph paper of the barn, and I'm thinking of the shirts and how I can use them to get the design I see in my head. In the box is grandpa's red flannel shirt. I figured that would make a perfect barn, and the gray corduroy pants would make a great roof. At first I thought the corduroy would be a great silo with a brown top, but after cutting it out I realized that it looked more like a thermos than a silo. There was a shirt that had a pattern in it that made the perfect silo, so I cut out 6 of those. I decided to do a quilt for grandma, but I also wanted to do something for my Dad and his 4 siblings, so I'm thinking of a wall hanging pattern with a barn in the center.

It's Thursday night. Jason's at work, and I don't watch Survivor, so I pulled everything out of the tubs and continued cutting out the red pieces. Each template piece was numbered so I could figure out how to put it back together. I cut out 6 of each piece. Then I cut out the white pieces for the barn door. By the time I went to bed, I had 6 barn doors finished.

After dinner I cut out the gray pieces and started piecing together the rows.

It's Saturday! Happy birthday Dad! I got up this morning to kids fighting over the Nintendo and figured I'd work on the barns for a while. We had to eat lunch in shifts as I had taken over the whole table. I got all of the background pieces cut out by lunch though. Grandpa had a white shirt that had little birds on it that was perfect for the background. I just had to make sure that the strips I cut had the bird in the right place in the pattern. By dinner time I had all the rows finished, but I couldn't quite get myself to quit until I had 1 of the 6 blocks finished... just to see if it would look as good as it did in my head. I want to have the barns done by midweek, and I'm sure they'll be done by then.
