~ Koda ~

Meet Koda!

As soon as we put an offer on the house Jason has been dreaming of getting the puppy he's wanted for the last 9 years. Laura, on the other hand, has wanted to wait until the kennel was built after the landscaping was done after our sewer main was replaced, and after the attic room was finished for the boys, and the bathroom redone to include a bathtub to bathe the kids and... and... and...

Guess who won that debate?

Jason's oldest brother's dog had puppies in October and as soon as Jason caught wind of that he knew he had to find a way to convince his wife that getting a dog in the middle of winter in a new house with no kennel built was a great idea. So, on January 21, 2006, he packed the kids early on that Saturday morning and told her that he was going to take the kids out for breakfast and do something fun so she could have a whole morning to herself. The kids, knowing where they were REALLY going, were so excited that even having the flu and having to ride with a bucket in his lap didn't stop Bryan from going along. They returned at noon with a puppy having met Jason's brother, Dave, and his family halfway, a 1-1/2 hour drive from here.

The kids fell in love with the puppy instantly and changed her name to Koda. Dave's kids had been calling her "Jay's dog" (or JD for short) for the last few months. Laura was quite shocked when the tailgate of the van opened revealing a borrowed pet taxi with a scared, whimpering black puppy cowered in the back of it, but it really didn't take long for her to fall in love with Koda either, especially with the kids all jumping up and down so excited to not have to keep a secret anymore.

Koda enjoys her walks and is getting much better about the leash and collar. Jonathan has promised to take her for at least 1 walk a day as part of "the deal."

Koda spent her first night in the pet taxi on the front porch and woke up at 2 am crying to go out. Jason jumped out of bed to walk her, and Laura was in disbelief as he never jumped out of bed when any of the 3 children cried as babies!

Megan loves to brush Koda. The My Little Pony brushes just weren't getting the job done, so her daddy let her brush Koda with the puppy brush.

The only one who has yet to warm up to Koda is Whiskers. Koda would love to be friends as she had many cat friends on the farm, but Whiskers isn't too sure about that. He has kept his distance but makes sure he knows where Koda is at every second. If Koda gets too close, Whiskers will arch, growl and hiss. Koda doesn't really care either way. I imagine they'll be all curled up together in a few months.
