Ok, admittedly this is not a picture I actually took. But Peter and I did run into a spider that looked pretty similar to this. It was a dark, forbidding night on the western outskirts of the city. The spider's body (not including legs) had a length and width of about 4 inches -- if it stretched its legs out it could probably reach a diameter of a foot. It was definitely weird. I hadn't heard about giant bugs in Osaka, so I asked Peter if he'd seen anything like that here. He told me he hadn't seen anything like that ANYWHERE and suggested we get the hell away from it before it started spitting acid. I tried to get close enough to take a picture but it kept scurrying away from me. Eventually it slid down a sewer grate, where if Japanese movies are to be believed it will become radioactive, grow to 100x its size and return to crush Tokyo. As for me, I'll restrict my tours to the eastern half of the city.
