Soviet � These were councils of workers and soldiers who were social revolutionists who set there own coarse of action.
Command Economy � To accomplish the 5-year goals, Stalin took control of the economic activity. This made every aspect of the economy under government control.
Collective � Stalin also took control of the farms, big and small. He then made them into collectives, or places were peasants worked on land that was owned be peasants. So that they were working for the good of all.
Kulak � Many peasants hated collectivization and wanted it to end, of these the wealthy ones were the most dangerous. Stalin wanted no revolutions and set out to destroy them.
Totalitarian State � Under Stalin, this is what the Soviet Union turned into. This is a for of government were the government controls every aspect of life for it�s people.
Socialist Realism � Stalin even took control of the arts and literacy. He made them use a style called social realism. Stalin hoped this would boost socialism by showing Soviet life in a positive light.
Lenin � He was well read on Marxist ideas and wanted Russia to follow the communistic idea. He made some modifications for Russian needs; but the Bolsheviks thought it was only a capitalist trick.
Osip Mandelstam � He was a Jewish poet who was imprisoned, tortured, and exiled because of a satirical verse about Stalin
Nicolas II � Was the czar of Russia before the Revolution. He carried mainly about his son then the nation
Gregorry Rasputin � Was a very influential man that is to of healed Czar Nicolas II�s son. The czarina made him a very powerful man, but Rasputin was actually a poor educated man who let his friends into power.
Joseph Stalin � Became the leader of Russia in 1928 after the Russian Revolution. He follows Lenin�s start, but makes Russia into more of a dictatorship more than anything.
Stalin�s 5 Year Plan � Once in power, Stalin realized that Russia had been defeated so many times because of it�s terrible economy. So in 1928 he made several 5-year plans to set up heavy industry, improve transportation, and increase farm output.

Mikhail Sholokhov � the author of And Quiet Flows the Don which got by the censors in the Russian government; it told of a man who was a part of WWI, the Russian Revolution and the Civil War; he later became of the few Soviet Noble Prize winners for literature

Socialist Revolution � This occurred once Stalin assumed power. He controlled every aspect of the economy and life, from the large industries to collective farming. Because of this, Russia�s economy flourished.
Bolshevik Revolution � The Bolsheviks, who were led by Lenin, overthrew the old government of Russia. They promised peace, land and bread to the war tired Russians. Mutinous sailors started the Revolution. Workers soon joined them.
Lenin�s New Economic Policy � Or NEP; this kept the banks, foreign trade and large industries under government control, but small businesses were allowed for private profit. This raised the standard of living but Lenin knew that NEP was only a temporary solution and his successor would bring them back to �pure � Communism.
