| CAUSES OF WWI: 1.Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. 2.Nations began to build up their armies in fear of other nations building up their armies, making the situation worse. 3.Austria did not agree completely to the ultimatum that Serbia gave them. 4.France and Russia signed an alliance, and France and Britain signed an entente cordiale, which made other countries fear them. 5.Russia sponsored a powerful form of nationalism called Pan-Slavism, which stated that all Slavic people shared a common nationality. EFFECTS OF WWI: 1. War was revolutionized, new techniques and technologies were brought forth to be used and adapted in later wars, such as machine guns, U-boats, and airplanes. 2.Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, and had to pay about 30 billion dollars to pay for damages and the like of �other countries,� because it was being blamed for the war. Tensions grew in Germany because it had to pay for other countries on top of its own expenses. 3.New nations were created in Eastern Europe, and some countries lost a portion of their territory. 4. Many nations still had tensions, and Germany was beginning to act barbaric, hence, WWII happened. 5.More than 8.5 million people had died, and twice that number were injured and/or handicapped for life. |
