   He eats fast because he wants to eat as much as possible before something happens to them while they're at their post.

  Their lives (if they live) after the war is over.
6. How does Paul react to Kat's death?
  He feels that his life is over, and meaningless without someone that he can relate to.

   He's no longer afraid because all of his friends have died, and he feels that he has nothing worth living for.

8. What is the irony of the book's final sentence?
  During the whole book Paul was afraid to die, but when he finally did die, he looked calm and almost glad to die.
