BIRD LIST FOR LANGSTONE HARBOUR Species accounts 1992 - 2001
A very scarce passage migrant and winter visitor

Approximately 15 birds were seen in a total of nine out of the ten years, averaging just one or two birds annually.  Most of these were seen on just one date only, including three which flew over.  Two were reported as oiled.  The records are as follows:

1992 - 1, February 3rd
1993 - 1, January 1st. 1 flew west, January 13th
1995 - 1 oiled, January 4th. 1, March 30th-31st
1996 - 1 flew west, March 3rd. 1, March 24th
1997 - 1 oiled, January 7th-12th. 1, January 13th and 26th
1998 - 1, January 26th, February 24th and March 1st. 1, November 7th/8th. 1 flew west, December 29th
1999 - 1, January 1st-3rd
2000 - 1, January 20th.
2001 - 1, December 18th-20th

All but one of the records fall into one of two periods, either mid-winter (December - February) or early spring (March), the latter indicating passage.  It is interesting to note that whereas this species has apparently become more numerous along the open coast in Hampshire during the ten year period (albeit with most records concerning birds flying past the observation point) it has not become any commoner in Langstone Harbour.  The scarcity of records would suggest that to see this rather elusive species you just have to be lucky!
