A Mighty Heart

Based on the true story of Daniel and Mariane Pearl (Angelina Jolie) who are both journalists that go to Pakistan shortly after 9/11. With one more interview to go, Daniel is kidnapped. The movie takes us on the 5-week journey, told from Mariane's perspective, of the search for Daniel. Everyone knows this story. Unfortunately, Daniel is ultimately beheaded. Mariane was pregnant at the time and wanted to tell this story so her son would know what kind of man his father was.

Wow. Here is another post-9/11 movie that is excellent, but unfortunately we know the ending. I'm surprised this is coming out in June. If it came out later I really believe that Jolie could get a pretty good Oscar push. Not the she can't anyway, it's just not as likely. The subject matter isn't enjoyable, because we know the ending. But I couldn't help but feel the devotion and love that this woman had for her husband. My wife said she thought it was "sweet." In a weird way it is. A touching scene shows Mariane text messaging Daniel "I love you" before she goes to bed even though his cell phone hasn't worked in weeks. I don't want to use the words "date movie," but I think this is a good movie for couples. It is also very very sad.

I said this after I saw "United 93," and I will say it again: Movies are a great thing. It's 2 hours where we can escape. We can just sit back and be entertained. Sometimes we laugh, cry or get fired up. We usually know what the ending is going to be. We know the good guy will win. We know the guy will get the girl. We know they will find the journalist that has been kidnapped. And even though we know, we still watch because it's how they do it that makes it fun. No matter how bad the situation, you still have that hope and that assurance that everything will be OK. Some times in real life, or in this case art imitating life, the ending isn't OK. And that is what makes movies like this hard to watch. That doesn't mean you shouldn't watch. Go see it.
