Lesson 9: Mineral Presentations

1. Focus and Review

• This lesson focuses on using prior knowledge of what we've learned and of the PowerPoint software to create a presentation to share with fellow students.
  

2. Objectives

• 1.04 Recognize that Copyright Laws protect creative work of individuals/groups/companies by citing sources.
  
• 2.11 Recognize, discuss, and use rubrics to evaluate elements (e.g., content, organization, appropriateness of materials, citations) of multimedia projects/products.
  
• 2.13 Identify, discuss, and use online collaborative tools (e.g., email, surveys, videoconferencing) to collect data for content area assignments/projects.3.07 Locate, select, organize, and present content area information from the Internet for a specific purpose and audience, citing sources.
• 3.08 Use a rubric as a guide to select and evaluate digital resources and information for content and usefulness in content area assignments as a class.
• As a culmination of all the research and observations done throughout the unit, students will use that knowledge, as well as new knowledge to create a presentation on a specific mineral.
• Incorporate the five higher order thinking skills in your sub-objectives: recall, analysis, comparison, inference, evaluation.
• PowerPoint Software needed.

3. Teacher Input

• Teacher will go over the requirements of the presentation.
• As the class follows, the teacher will go through different ways to search and provide the students with websites that might be helpful for them to use.
  
• The media specialist will review and emphasize the importance of citing all work that you use.
  

4. Guided Practice

• The teacher and the media specialist will work with each group of students to find specific information about their mineral. They will record their findings on a teacher-created worksheet with all the appropriate questions and requirements for their research. We will use some of the websites provided within this uint as well as different search strategies.
  
• During this step the teacher monitors and circulates, checking student understanding and answering individual questions. The teacher will circulate with the students whether working with print materials or technology materials.
  

5. Independent Practice

• Students will research information on the Internet or using other print resources available on their assigned mineral.
  
• Pairs will design a presentation made up of 4 slides. They will be required to use their prior knowledge of the software and insert pictures along with all the design techniques PowerPoint has to offer.
  

6. Closure

• The final aspect of this unit will be to share the presentations with the other students in class.
  
• They will be graded using a teacher-created rubric, which they were given before hand. The rubric will include items such as: creativity, good amount of information gathered, knowledge of the mineral studied, along with spelling and gramatical errors.
  
• I feel that through this experience, the students will gain more knowledge of minerals that we may not have disucssed. They will also become more comfortable with the PowerPoint software and all it has to offer.
