IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Situation resolved!
Then almost 2 years later I acquired 3 roommates & I had many "false alarms". I asked repeatedly by phone to end my contract but they said NO. I even wanted to give them their system back but still NO. "You must complete your 3 year agreement." OK, fine.
I don't need the $30 monthly service at all now because I moved on Dec 15, 2002 and it was not possible to take the system to my new residence. My contract ended on Feb 4, 2003. I called them on Jan 13, 2003 to cancel. They said "We can't do that. You did not give your cancellation in writing 30 days before contract end so it was automaticly renewed for one year. If you send the letter now your agreement will be terminated on Feb 4, 2004." I wanted it done before then but they would not budge. I sent the cancellation letter certified/confirmation mail that day & they recieved it on Jan 16, 2003.
After all this arguement & confusion I recieved a call Feb 13, 2003 from a supervisor about the situation. I was informed that cancellation calls can't be accepted for your safety because "burgulars" may be trying to disarm alarms by calling the number on the warning sign. I agreed that it made sense. They appaulagized that the repersentatives I spoke to previously didn't forward my call to a supervisor so I could go through the proper steps.
The main reason that the monitoring renews automaticly is so that the elderly using the systems won't panic thinking their service is gone if they forget to renew. I was informed that monitoring would end on original agreement terms as of Feb 4, 2003. I thanked them for securing my home and was told a final letter would be sent to my new address.
I have recieved that letter and have not recieved any bills at this time.
Always insist on talking to a supervisor if you are in a similar predicament that involves terminating service at the end of contract. Also, send your cancellation certified/confirmation mail.
There are other monitoring services that are far less money and don't require a contract. There is no reason to spend more than $15/month . I would seriuosly consider this option.
