The Beckingham Palace

Frillies, The fancy lingerie shop in the small town of Sawbridgeworth on the Herefordshire/Essex border, is gearing up for the arrival of the most famous thong-wearer in the nation Victoria Beckham. Posh, David and Brooklyn will soon be moving into the 2.5million pounds dream house they have been renovating for the last 18months at a cost of millions.

Formerly a council-owned children’s home, the Grade II listed house, which stands in 24acres of land, was empty for nine years before the Beckhams bought it in October 1999. And although Victoria may describe the Georgian-style Rowneybury ? or Beckingham Palace as it’s been dubbed ? As an old house, it only dates back to the 1930s.

Apart from the fact that it’s very handy for her parents, who live a few miles away in Goff’s Oak (where Victoria has been staying), it was the grandness and the campness of the house that first attracted Posh, specifically the huge kitsch chandelier in the hallway. Now with even more Elton-esque glitzy trimmings, the house is almost ready for the Gucci to be hung up in the wardrobe.

Sawbridgeworth may be short on Bond Street shops, but there is a boutique called Barbara B, which has some quite nice stuff, and the Gowan Galler does exclusive jewellery. Then there’s the Straw Hat, a restaurant the couple has already tried out, a pub, The Gate, and Toplines hair salon where Victoria could get feathered for just pounds 25.

There is also an exclusive nursely linked to Howegreen House, a local prep school, which has already sent a prospectus to them. But judging by the thousands that have been lavished on security, the Beckhams are unlikely to be sending Brooklyn off to a local school with a bag of crisps and a Ribena in his rucksack.

Now here is the exclusive guide to the new Beckingham Palace...

Entrance hall

A grand theme has been established in the room where all family’s friends are greeted upon arriving at the Beckhams’ home. The bright entrance hall boasts an oak staircase that bowled Victoria ever as soon as she saw it.

Canopy

East Herefordshire District council granted special permission for Posh and Becks to construct a hotel-style canopy leading to the front door. It will keep that Gucci nice and dry and shield visitors from paparazzi cameras.

The Hepburn Bedroom

Guests can be accommodated in a variety of en-suited bedrooms, including one which is themed around Victoria’s favourite style icon, Audrey Hepburn. The room has a romantic 50s feel to it.

Kitchen

The kitchen, like the one in the couple’s Chelshire penthouse, it modern, functional and large, as David likes cooking. The lounge also has a contemporary feel. “It has a modern, hottish vibe with bog sofas, wooden floors and great big rugs,” says Victoria.

Brooklyn’s room

As well as the pictures on the wall depicting all his favourite Disney characters (which were specially commissioned for his room), Brooklyn will also be able to nod off gazing at the domed roof complete with dreamy fibre optic stars.

Three Gazebos

More planning permission was granted for a romantic gazebos surrounded by leafy plants and trees with a decorated wooden domed roof; an 11-foot ornamental gazebo with a peaked roof; and a lakeside gazebo with a cedar shingle roof and decking.

Flower Bed

There is major colour in the garden with the flower bed along the drive containing hundreds of daffodil bulbs, hyacinths, crocuses and snowdrops. Behind the house, there is a wildflower garden with bluebells, lilies and dogwood, a traditional symbol of everlasting love.

Trees

The 24-acre grounds have had a mammoth overhaul with oaks, sycamores, maples and horse chestnuts. The locals are delighted that there will be more trees, but the real reason for the planting is to provide the front of the house, already shielded from view, with even more privacy.

Recording Studio

With Victoria’s solo career about to kick off, David got the house fitted with a state-of-the-art recording studio for her Christmas present so she can work in her dressing gown.

Snooker Room

David’s basement snooker room is the kind of playroom that they grown-up boy would want. It’s been done out in masculine colours but has trendy ultra-modern touches in the form of plasma TVs, and lots of other games for David and the lads.

Swimming Pool

The 100ft indoor swimming pool was already a focal point of the house when it was a children’s home, and has been completely redone for the Beckhams. The couple hope to start teaching Brooklyn to swim very soon as he loves water.

Barbeque Area

The Beckhams have built a special outdoor area to host summer parties for friends and family in the hot afternoons and warm evenings. Expect to see Mel B, Baby Spice, Gary and Phil Neville all munching cheeseburgers and hotdogs here while David mans the grill.

Tennis Court

Although they are wuickly running out of space, the latest idea the Beckhams have had for the grounds is a tennins court (at one point they wanted a golf course but this has changed). Their planning permission application has just been made and is sill-awaiting approval.

Gates

The half-mile driveway to the house was several gates, one of which was so impressive that permission had to be obtained from the council for it. Guests must identify themselves at an entry phone, so anyone who hasn’t been invited stands no chance of getting in.

Security

Security is tighter than a pair of Kylie’s hot pants with the whole house fitted with state of the art security systems including cameras, and security staff 24 hours a day. Because of death in threats in the past, there will be staff on the grounds at all times.
