Becks...with his new hair style headed into 10 Dowing Street

David Beckham headed into 10 Downing Street on 10th May 2002 boasting the new streaked hairstyle he will sport in the World Cup.

The injured England skipper, proud wearer of the nation's No7 shirt, was still limping as he met Tony and Cherie Blair.

But the PM gave him and his team-mates a leg-up by wishing them good luck for the forthcoming football spectacular in Japan and Korea.

Becks was invited to No.10 along with hero goalie David Seaman fresh from Arsenal's Double-winning exploits defender Gareth Southgate and coach Sven Goran Eriksson.

They were joined by FA chiefs Adam Crozier and David Davies, and telly pundit Trevor Brooking.

Man United ace Becks designed his racy new barnet himself with a pair of clippers. His locks were swept up into a central Mohican-style spike, dyed blonde.

The 27-year-old player, dressed in a smart brown suit with gold shirt and tie, is still fighting for fitness after breaking a bone in his left foot.

But he is expected to make England's first game on June 2.

The Downing Street visit came after Eriksson announced the 23 players who will make up the World Cup squad.

A group of fans gathered outside the street gates. And with unshakeable optimism, they sang: We've got the World Cup in our hands.
