Goals - 93rd Minute Free Kick |
|
England skipper David Beckham
sent his country into the World Cup Finals with a last-minute free-kick at Old
Trafford this afternoon.
Beckham, outstanding despite a dismal England display, struck with a 25-yard
freekick just seconds after Germany had drawn at home with Finland.
It had looked as though England were destined to be sent scuttling into a
play-off with Ukraine following the worst display of Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign
as coach.
But man of the match Beckham had other ideas on his home ground to salvage the
point which saw his country through.

Goals - 1st Goal From England Capt. |
|

While David Beckham regularly bangs in
goals for Manchester United, up until 24/03/01 he had only scored one
goal at international level in 38 games. But the
England skipper doubled his tally when his right-footed blast scorched
past Antti Niemi in the Finnish goal.
The goal was the culmination of a sweeping move that began with Steve
McManaman picking up the ball yards inside Finland's half. The Real
Madrid star ran at the defence before passing to Paul Scholes on the
edge of the box. The Manchester United midfielder nudged the ball
sideways to Beckham who took a touch to control the ball before
unleashing a shot across Niemi and into the net.
The 50th minute strike gave England the lead and Beckham said he was
pleased he could add to his goal against Colombia during the World Cup
in 1998. "The goal has been a long time coming and I hope I don't
have to wait another three years for the next one. "I
didn't know what to do when I scored so I just ran over and jumped on
Teddy Sheringham's back as he was warming up on the touch-line.
"It might have taken a bit of a deflection but they all count.

Goals - The Treble Season |
|

David Beckham once described the freekick
against Barcelona during United's famous Treble season as his favourite
goal of all time. The beautifully taken freekick came during 64th min at
Old Trafford in front of a 53,601 crowd. The Old Trafford faithfuls
witnessed a Beckham's trademark freekick.
The way Becks generated a 70 miles an hour of
power with side foot technique is miraculous. The keeper had no
chance at all. Its truly one of the greatest European goals ever seen at
the Theatre Of Dreams.

Goals - The World Cup 1998 |
|

David Beckham struck a glorius freekick
against the Colombians during the 1998 World Cup. Beckham struck during
the 30th minute of the game which the Engish dominated.
His perfectly flighted freekick came from
all of 25 metres which Hoddle, once known
for his long range shooting, would have been of. "It came at the right time really," said Beckham. "I
hadn't scored from a freekick for sometime and I hadn't scored for
England, of course until now."

Goals - The Half Way Line |
|

The move begins when Beckham received a
pass from Brian McClair, who could never have imagined that he was
making a goal assist. Beckham does not touch the ball, but cleverly
allows the ball to do the work, letting it run past him.
This gives him time to look up and assess his options. There is no
immediate pass on, late in the game and already 2-0 up, no one made a
forward run. Beckham spots Wimbledon keeper off his line and decides to
shoot.
To hit the target from the halfway line(60 yards),
he must strike a shot of sufficient power and precision to rise high and
dip at the right time. To achieve this, Becks leans back and raise the
ball and hits it through the front of his foot to gain power. The ball
rises sharply, curls gently from left to right and floats at a height
until it reaches the six yard box. Then it drops suddenly to leave
Sullivan stranded.
