Weekly Update (21.8.2000)

Instead of writing a cohesive essay, I've decided to write a section by section account of what's next for Downtime.

1) Weekly Update: Writing a short and very negative review the Fiona Apple concert turned out to be a difficult task . Why?  Not because I'm a huge Fiona fan or because it was my first time writing a concert review. And it certainly wasn't because dozens of music critics had already written better ones.  It was just difficult for me to look back on  February 29, 2000 as a bad night.  I had a great time and I couldn't wait to see her again.  I hope the three people I wrote that for catch my meaning.  I'm just glad I didn't throw away my ticket stub in disgust.*

*Maybe the child really is gone: On May 26th, Fiona put on an incredible show at the Beacon Theater, more than making up for her immature and unprofessional behavior at Roseland.  Her 90-minute(!) set featured almost every song  from her two albums. It was obvious from the opening song that Fiona was out to prove a point. She was polished. She was professional. She danced like a dog trying to shake water off its body. It was great.
The best there is. The best there was. The best there ever will be.

2) Niteshift Recaps: I didn't really give anyone a reason to visit this section. Niteshift  is a radio program that can be heard on Thursday mornings from 3:30 a.m to 6 a.m. in New York on  WBAI.  For a year or so the show was co-hosted by freelance writer and internet celebrity Gabrielle Gabrielle.  Because of  the show's inconvenient time slot, loyal fans of Gab posted summaries of the show on the gabgab.com message board for those that couldn't stay up for it.  One week, the real audio stream that fans outside of NYC used to listen to Niteshift crapped out and I was asked to write a synopsis of the show. The rest is history. "History", of course, meaning another section of  my site that will never be updated.

My six-week stint as the unofficial Niteshift recapper ended up being a rewarding experience. Attempting to give an accurate account of two hour radio program and be entertaining was definitely a test of my skills.  For the first time, I was writing something that I knew was going to be read by a number of people. I received tons of feedback from readers (mostly positive) and the hosts of the show themselves (no comment).  Most importantly, the recaps allowed me to try my hand at a something new while drawing some much-needed attention to this page.  Now, click on the links, visit the section and let me know what you think.

3) Song Of The Month: Until someone tells me to stop, Downtime = free music This is the best idea I've come up with since I started this page all those months ago. I've been slacking on the album reviews and the update recently, but you've had 15 or so mp3's to add to your collection over the past five months. If you've never been to this section, all I do post three or four mp3's a month. I write a paragraph next to each link, usually explaining why I like the song or one song's connection to another. Click on the links, get the songs. It's as simple as that. I could do it every week, if you'd like.

"I'll make your head spin like the fuckin' Exorcist..."
4) Album Reviews: My friend Kevin wrote a review of the Beatnuts' fourth album, A Musical Massacre  last year but I got from him only two weeks ago. I Again, feedback would be greatly appreciated.

And that's what's happening on my page. If anything else pops up, I'll let you know right here on this page..........right here.

By the way, I hope the Baker for Ewing deal falls through. We've already got a overpaid forward that's a shell of his former self. A man so injury-prone, that he requires in-game massages by opposing players.

Pat may be old, but at least he can still dunk.

Good luck in Seattle, Franchise.
